Based on these forums, my answer is undoubtedly yes. The amount of social awkwardness is quite amusing.

LMAO, yes. Some of the stuff I've read on here just makes me cringe.

Sadly the amount of desperation on here is ridiculous. The amount of threads on "should I be single or in a relationship", "why do girls only like jerks" and other socially-awkward/depressing threads makes me want to puke knowing the next generation of "males" are pathetic. It seems worse in this forum than others I frequent.

Who ISN'T weird?
It doesn't matter if you like or don't like anime.
Some people are just more open it (about being weird) than others.

Too long of a thread to read all if it, but I get the general gist here.
I'm in the Anime Club at my school, and whenever I find time to attend the meetings I don't enjoy being there. Not because I don't enjoy discussing anime, but because the people there aren't very fun to be with. Anime is a vast-reaching medium, but it is true that it most easily appeals to the stereotype of the "loner". I have plenty of friends myself, anime watchers or not, and my grades are pretty good but I'm not insanely popular or physically stunning. In fact, you could call me extremely normal. Most people who watch anime might be odd, but 99% of the time they mean no harm to you as a person. So it's generally ok.

Mostly.

You can watch anime and not make a big deal about it - or you can be an anime fan. The latter would be.

I have been into anime as a kid grew up on the old late 80's and 90's anime and when I entered HIgh School I met the "Anime Kids" they where very strange but I approached them when I was a sophmore or Jr because that's when Naruto got popular so I asked them if they have seen other anime and they said "nah man Naruto is the only anime!" I don't think they have ever seen other anime but mainstream anime but don't get me wrong I like Naruto Shipudden but not the first of the series it was boring and Naruto got annoying saying belive it all the damn time but no one had the same intrest of anime as I did in high school and I looked the part wore nothing but DBZ, Gundam, and video game shirts my whole 4 years of high school. Was I weird? maybe but I was well known in high school as the "Oh he's in my *insert class here*, he's pretty cool guy" not popular at all like in movies or tv shows.

Personally, like star trek fans, furries, and twilight addicts, you are right there are a percentage of the population who stand out as being excessive. or who make all things anime a life style rather than simply a passtime.

but they A) represent a small (if visible) proportion of the anime watching populaton.

B) are not excessively large compared to the proportion of people who take some other passion to similar socially visible and uncommon extremes.

so No. Most anime lovers are not excessively weird.

Totally agree with the above.

Anime is part of pop culture (albeit the geek-arrific part) so you can't call 'most' anime fans 'weird', not with the recent proliferation of movie, gaming, technobuzz, and science-nerd culture, but I don't know... my opinion on the whole thing just implodes when that small percentage of an outright freakish demographic--on whom anime producers rely to make the subculture grow--goes and participates in sh*t like creating your own virtual woman. The term exploitation must not even register on the brain. It's infuriating.

Case in point:

I agree.. my friends who like anime end up being smart. But I don't know if it's because I like smart people or not...And they also end up being loners like me. Which I'm totally okay with. In my eyes, they are normal.

Weird? That's like saying people who read books, or watch televised dramas and professional sports are of certain qualities and misconception.

We're all just unique

Do what you like doing regardless of what other people say because if people tease you for watching Anime or anything of the sort, in my eyes, I don't think they're your friends, they're just ignorant sadists. Be yourself and do what you love doing. If someone tells you that what you like is crap, for kids, loners etc. even though they know nothing about it and pretend or act like they do, just ignore them. If you're being constantly bullied and physically abused, then you should tell someone immediately. People like those are just ignorant, insolent, sadistic pigs.
