That he did, every week, also doing "ninjitsu" or a martial art he named himself(no joke, I just can't remember the name), in the middle of the sidewalk, between classes, when everyone is trying to get to class...

Can't, there may be "sword crossing" and that is a big no-no, might lead to a "sword fight" and we can't have that happening in the middle of a group hug.

Time and place, name it. Hahaha, although since I live on an island I may just have to hug myself...

Nah, I don't believe that's true. There are geeks and loners who watch anime, I'll admit (I consider myself an anime/video game geek). However, I have friends who watch anime and they can be the complete opposite. One friend I know (he's practically my brother) is obsessed with cars...he loves them. He loves fixing cars and knows a lot about cars and he's a pretty likeable/sociable person. Some of my other friends are in bands/rock groups, lawyers, AC repairmen...I mean, there are countless people with different personalities. I myself am not even that bad. I have a hard time talking to people, but once I get to know them I can't shut up. So I can be a loner at times, but I usually talk to people almost every day. So I really don't believe that stereotype. There are some really freaky/weird people out there though lol.

And I'm the biggest open otaku possible, up to the point that i'm purchasing a Black Rock Shooter decal for my car.

Am I weird? Sure, quite a bit I'm sure.
But not in the weird sense you or your friends are probably imagining.
I am a tad on the loner side.
I don't have tons of friends.
But here's how I see it, who are YOU to judge ME?
Nobody.

By the way, you can check my history on here, I'm usually FAR more civil than this, but i'm reading all of this and you don't seem to be actually wanting to DISCUSS it, you just keep defending your viewpoint of we're all fat hairy nerds and HORRIBLY unfit for, as you put it, the 'real world'.

Maybe you should think before posting something that judges a based community, on a forum, run by said based community. Just a thought.

You sir, get an internet high-five from me. Which obviously isn't worth anything, but too baddddd you get it anyways

AHYWHO! Back on ze topic. It isn't just anime/fantasy fans that are weird/loners. So I'm not sure where you're getting this generalization. And as stated before, asking this sort of thing in an anime community probably wasn't the greatest idea. I'm sure a lot of people here have some awkwardness, including me, but I doubt anime is the cause. Honestly, I'd say you're the weird one for going through such trouble to hide something you love from your own friends. Those don't sound like true friends to me.

I let my freak flag fly, wear anime shirts, show I'm a fan of anime, D&D, WoW (or any games I play). If you don't like me for who I am or think I'm too much of a geek.. well..

People generalize because it's possible. Let's put it this way, what other group of people out there in the world pretend to speak a language they don't know or pretend to be a picture of there favorite character online? The answer to this threads question is, yes, otaku's are friggin' weird as hell. And I really don't care. It really doesn't matter. Nor should it justify treating someone differently for taste.

Look at gays for christ sake. If they can have a friggin' parade showing there pride to be different then the average person because of what they love, what's wrong with us?

Personally, I don't own any anime merchandise, this site is the first time I've contributed financially to anything anime related, you can't tell it all I love this stuff by looking at me. But bring up an anime topic and you'll see a fire burn inside me.

Most anime fans I've met in real life are loners who have the attitude of "if it ain't Japanese, it sucks."

Depends really. No one would ever call me a geek nowadays but when I was 14 - 16 I definitely was. Now I'm 18, I drink all the time, used to smoke - go out and party, work go gym, get with all these desperate girls so I'm pretty much the archetypal British teenager at the moment. But I was pretty weird when I was younger, my 'friends' used to insult me but they weren't really my friends so I stopped getting into contact with them. Nowadays I hang around with a rich blonde chick who likes rap - whereas I used to be one of those I hate everything except rock types and I even went to see Mac Miller with her a few months back.

So long story short: the weird ones are the strange guys that do nothing all day but say homophobic slurs, play video-games and fuck-up their education because they're too lazy to do anything however.

However, I could probably get away with saying most anime fans are innately awkward socially but that doesn't make a big difference because you'd grow out of it. So just have confidence and tell your friends the wonders of how Goku saved the Earth so many types.

PS. Most of the non-anime fans I know love Dragonball Z. Even random university chicks.

You need to talk to someone about anime IRL? Why?

In my experience whever I ran into another anime fan IRL, we would always end up arguing since we would usually have very different opinions on most shows.

yeah i want a friend with the same interests as me and go hang out instead of doing absolutely nothing at home

Near all my friends hate anime except for one(who loves hellsing but that's about it). They know I like it I and occasionally get a few insults thrown my way but I really don't care since I have things I insult them for just as much. The thing is something is only an insult if you want it to be so a person saying to me "you watch cartoons" really isn't an insult to me so I always just responded with a simple answer of yes I do, so in responce - no I don't feel all anime fans are lonely social rejects, some are of course but you shouldn't let the minority cloud your view of the majority.

Anyway sure some anime fans take it to far anda re a bit crazy, but some WoW players are so crazy that they play the game non stop until they die(has happened multiple times), some call of duty players stab there friends out of rage of losing to them in a game(true story), some football(soccer) fans try to murder players of there own team who do things like score own goals and miss easy goal(it has happened), some music fans love singers so much they literally have full sanctuaries built to him and attack whoever is going out with there prefered hero(see Justin Bieber), and these are all seen as completely normal things but they still have crazy crazy fans and anime is no different.
But lets continue with some other more unaccepted fanbases, a man has paid millions of dollars to get a batcave built in his basement, some star trek fans love star trek so much they can speak Klingon, a complete made up language not spoke anywere in the world, do I even need to mention how sonic the hedgehog? A character who's games sell millions of copies and have you seen the fanart? All fanbases have there oddballs just saying the anime one is like this is so blatantly wrong.

Early years of anime fandom, perhaps fanboy could be the right words to describe one. I wouldn't really look at them as loners in this day and age as this era has more ability to talk and connect than say the 80s and 90s did.

Lots of people are into their hobbies, some more strongly than others. Anime fandom is no worse than other hobby pursuits.
