Solutions to Bullying

So last year, one of my HS classes was really dedicated to stop bullying. Although I saw bullying as more of an issue in middle school, I guess it still happens in high school. My classmates were coming up with ideas to go speak to middle school kids and have an assembly (although I never took assemblies seriously in middle school). They were also considering talking to people in elementary school to prevent the middle school bullying.

How do you define bullying? What do you think is the cause of bullying? Is it just a natural part of life (will it ever go away)? What do you think schools should do to educate students about bullies?

Bullying should be called what it really is: abuse, harassment, and assault.
It should never be a natural part of life because it is not good or holistic to hurt others.
Bullying Is endemic to all areas of society, and it is just as prevalent in the adult workforce as it is in middle school or high school.
Schools should have a zero tolerance policy on bullying I think, and they should be welcoming and provide warm and safe environments for persons who are bullied to come forward.

I think they should educate students about education.

Sorry, in the U.S. we have a running-joke called the public education system backed up by fundamentalist religious schools which teach that Jesus used to ride around on dinosaurs. And they don't even call them dinosaurs, they call them Jesus Horses. They're whacked out of their damn minds and the rest are nearly illiterate. If we didn't have foreign students, we wouldn't fucking have any....

I think they should educate students that even after you become an adult, giant organizations are still going to try to bully the shit out of you until you conform to their bullshit standards.

Here's a thought: punch people in the face. Used to work back in the 80s. Are you not allowed to do that now with all the school shootings and whatnot?

Why am I trying to post while I'm drunk... this is just a frenzy of badly edited lines...

There is a good deal of published research on bullying. What it is... Who it effects... Reasonable ways to deal with it... etc. This is not the forum you should go to for advice. A school councilor can give you some advice, but won't necessarily be the best person. A librarian can help you find information on bullying if you are truly interested. If you have a university near you, they may have a librarian who specializes in education, which is even better. The best of all choice is find someone who studies bullying, email them, and see if they can point you in the right direction.

There are lots of anti-bullying programs out there. They aren't in my field, so I don't know how well they work, but I do know there is a lot of information out there, if you take the time to look.

Bullying amongst children and adults will never cease. That is something people worldwide will have to realize. Solutions to try to help people overcome their issue with bullying could be teaching certain individuals to defend themselves and not make mistakes such as suffering in silence and not telling someone who can help you.

It's a pity schools doesn't have a tougher policy on bullying in this day and age. They should conduct more ways to discipline bullies, such as apologizing in front of the class with their parents present, detention, school cleanup and counseling, to talk on why they need to harass someone who did absolutely nothing to them. If they continue bullying, they could face being transferred to one of those correctional schools for children with behavior problems. The security guard and administrators did nothing when I saw a boy beaten up right in front of the security cameras. I walked up to the main office seeing them gossiping in front of the monitor. It could definitely help lessen the percentage of harassment in schools.

Heh!

Being Scottish, I have a long line of ancestors, who like myself, are big fans of fist fights and deranged women, and fist fights with deranged women. I don't know what it is about violence that's so damn attractive, probably just a symptom of the male mind in general. Personally, I promote violence in all confrontations with unreasonable people. Trying to reach the mind of an unreasonable person is impossible, their face however, presents itself.

If it was a question of intellectual incompatibility it would be one thing, but when someone is targeting you, they're enacting a predatory persona. They must be broken of it, or they themselves must be broken. Those are the only options. Pretending we can turn the other cheek, or apply social pressure with kid gloves, or leave it up to school administrators is ignoring the larger social problem that extends into adulthood.

As for the idea that you can shame inner city kids by bringing their parents into the classroom, are you kidding me? What parents? Some of their parents are actual criminals. If not most. And try finding a teacher with the balls to do that knowing the student probably owns a gun and even with all the metal detectors, they probably have it accessible within walking distance. Perhaps it will have some effect on suburban schools in wealthy areas, but when things have broken down to the point they have that kind of solution is laughable. Locking people up isn't the solution either. So you might ask what is the solution? Violence. Abject, unadulterated, physical pain. As they do across the world and most famously in Singapore -- we need to start caning people. And for more serious crimes we need to flog people with leather and iron beads. Flay the flesh from their backs.

Oh, Ash, you're a sicko! Am I? Am I? Or is it that puritanical solutions have only enlarged the problem.

Gang members brag about going to jail. Who the fuck is going to brag about having someone beat their ass with a stick until they cried like a little girl? Who walks down the street acting hardcore when their ass has been canned? Nobody. We need to make crime and punishment UNCOOL again. As it stands right now, there's nothing uncool about robbing and stabbing people, spending some time in prison, then coming out with "street cred." How about we just rip the flesh right off their backs? How about we tan their hides? How about we hang murderers? Eh???

Nah, can't do that, because Jesus rides on Dinosaurs and he said to be nice to horrible people. Yeah, I'm thinking Jesus was a horrible person for trying to disarm good people and leave them defenseless both physically & mentally.

You're never going to stop bullying and the best way to protect yourself against physical bully is fight, scratch, claw, bite, poke, kick, and do whatever it takes to inflict pain on them. There is a reason why no other animals mess with the badger or wolverine or the wolverine in the wild.

The mental part of the bullying is the toughest part but I've always believed if you want to get back at anyone trying to take you down and it's live a good life. If you give them the satisfaction of making you're life miserable than they'll feed off of it and keep doing it. If the see whatever they try to throw at you has no importance at all to you at all than it'll likely drive them nuts and they'll eventually move on.

But as far as education against bullying it's just a waste of time.

I was a victim to bullying in high school and teachers didnt do shit for me except tell the other person to quit it which of course never works. So after being pissed off to the limit i kicked the guy who was bullying me in the nuts and threw a right hook at his face when he crouched and told him to get off my effing back... Im sure he heard me while lying on the ground. Bullys picks on those who they see weak and easy to control so if you show that they cant push you around so easily they wont see you as a possible person to pick on. Increase of awareness in teachers would be nice but its also good to stand up for yourself. Of course that doesnt mean i support bringing a fking gun or anything dangerous to school and threatening the bully.

I was bullied because I am short, but I just let them talk and I did not let it bother me. What did bother me was in high school when this like 6'2" kids came up to me (5'5') and started pushing me around in gym, so I told the coach what was going on, he did not do anything. So we were on the court and long story short he and a couple of his friends decided to circle me and harass me, so I threw one punch and connect with the 6'2' guys knee and he went limping/ crawling to the locker room squealing, the others backed off and that was that. Still got teased but nothing physical again after that.

Best thing is just let it go if it is just words, fighting pointlessly and getting suspended or expelled even worst will not help you in school or life. Also tell your parents whats going on, if they are anything like my parents they will help you. Just my opinion though.

Well, I don't think bullying will ever stop. It seems everyone is bullied at one point in time. But in today's schools (like in mine), the teachers seem to take bullying very seriously. So when I was being bullied by a group of guys, I just told my favorite teacher. And he took take of the rest! But of course it helps when they're all expelled

Wow really people still think that bullying exists, they're only bullying you if you let it bother you most people are just naturally arrogant jerks who like to joke around, because if you think about most society these days has dulled their sense of emotions these days especially people my age.
