I always find it interesting that people always ask how they can stop bullying. But only how to stop a bully from bullying you.

I think the solution is in the concept of: How to NOT become a bully.

If we're able to teach children that it's totally NOT cool to pick on others, and squash the habits of picking on people who are different from you, to not take advantage of those weaker, I think we would produce less bullies. Less bullies, mean less victims yes?

We need to identify hostile behavior before it blossoms into a full fledged problem, and teach children (people in general really) how to channel whatever is making them negative into something else, rather than taking it out on others.

I personally find it really depressing that we live in a culture that likes to place more blame on victims than aggressors and will bend over backwards to find ways it's somehow the victim's fault.

Totally agree that prevention is the way to go, and that we need to be teaching kids not to bully others rather than so much emphasis on how it's somehow the victim's responsibilty to make the bullies stop.

Furthermore, I think that kids who go on to bully anyway need harsher punishments. A lot of things bullies from my school days did would get them arrested in the 'real world', but in school the most they'd get was a 30 minute detention, if they were even punished at all. I really don't see how kids are sent the right messages if they can get away with things as serious as physical or sexual assault and harassment with just a wave off of "It's just kids being kids".

There are only temporary and isolated remedies to bullying, short of worldwide mind control (which is purely unrealistic and unwanted). Mankind is simply its own worst enemy by nature.

If you are a younger member who is currently a victim of bullying, read this.

There a lot of talking heads on TV pushing the DON'T HIT BACK agenda. Those people and their advice will play a role in making your life miserable.

If someone attacks you, defend yourself. Don't know how to defend yourself? Speak with a friend, or your parent, or find a martial arts teacher. There are plenty of ways to learn how to fight. What's important is that you do fight. Bullies want an easy target, someone who cowers down and allows them their fun. Don't be that.

Unfortunately, if people are ganging up on you, fighting is out of the question. No amount of training will turn you into Ezio Auditore. If you are a victim of group bullying, go to an authority figure. There is no shame in doing this. They can switch your classes to move you away from your tormentors.

As for the macro element of things, I don't think bullying will ever "end." There will always be aggressive, overly masculine people out there who want to pick on others. The trick is to teach those "others" how to stick up for themselves.

What is that bullying that you are all talking about. In my school that doesnt exis if somebody gets on you nerve you pick a fight and the stronger wins. And you willl never again talk with him and that is the end.

The school system isn't helping at all to solve this problem of bullying when a bully picks a fight with that one guy who will hand his ass to him, and the school administration suspends/expels both of them.

The justice in the U.S. is all about resolution, not true justice. But hey it's a lot easier to arrest both persons involved in "mutual combat" (that's an actual bullshit term I've heard Admin use in my High School once) and suspend/expel them than to investigate, interrogate, and find out who was at fault and to let the victim walk free.

And that definitely doesn't help either. Something tells me these people have never been bullied in their life or have children, relatives, or friends who've been bullied.

when i was a kid, there was bullying, but there wasnt this stuff about ending your life. either you stood up for yourself. fought and got your ass kicked, fought and won. the bullying stopped. or you didnt. you got bullied until you graduated, then it was over.

The option I chose as a kid to confront bullying was to stand up for myself and fight back. basically I got into a lot of fights as a kid, and once the bully sees your not a pushover, he will stop.

another solution would be to tell adults or find a group of good friends that will stick out for you (strength in numbers)

I agree. I was bullied since middle school it stopped when I started being aggressive myself because there was no one to stand up for me.
