The brilliant minds at the production staff of Kokoro Connect decided to do a prank for the director's cut edition of the DVD boxset, and called up a b-list voice actor, Mitsuhiro Ichiki to audition for a "starring role" in their show, they told him he was a "perfect fit"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsuhiro_Ichiki If you didn't know, he voiced Christ in Angel Beats among some other minor roles. Not a nobody.

Needless to say he was floored. He spoke to them on the phonecall (that was taped and played back afterwards publicly for his humiliation) that he was throwing a celebration, taking his mother out to eat, among other things.

He showed up, they did an audition, he held a few radio interviews (all bogus), and they ended it all by telling him that the entire thing was staged, that he wasn't good enough for their show, and that if he wanted, he could have a job "as a janitor, or to clean the toilets or something" in front of a live audience. They then proceeded to make fun of him on a radio show afterwards where the VAs for Aoki (Takumi Terushima) and Yui (Hisako Kanemoto) made fun of his career and called him a worthless actor/person among other things.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh2_joRXGXc - excerpts of the taped footage, including his defamation.

Fast forward to the present time, Tomokazu Sugita (Gintoki, Kyon, etc) has a talk radio show, and the guy, who's good friends with Sugita came on and explained what happened. Needless to say Sugita was pissed. That started the firestorm that's going on now. Silver Link is getting shelled.

TLDR; destroying someone's dream is not cool. I really like Kokoro Connect and all, but I hope they pay for what they've done.

Silver Link's stock has since plummeted

Wow, that's not very professional. I agree the company should have more common sense than that.

How does any legitimate business allow for something this elaborate to happen, the fact that their stock plummeted makes have belief in humanity, if only a little.

There's a lot of misinterpretations going on in this shitstorm.

However, needless to say, the staff behind this event ought to apologize to this VA. They should be punished accordingly or even step down.

I read about this on another site earlier and not happy with what I'm seeing.

BS. Now I'm not sure on the future of Kokoro Connect now..(mainly the unlikeness of a Season 2). Considering this is one of the best series this summer imo, I am quite disappointed to see this shit.

And to think I loved Silver link and their work. What a shame. I wish they could handle this without making the anime suffer. Tisk tisk Silver link. (just between us, it won't change the fact that I love their work ;p)

I'd like to believe we aren't getting the story in complete accuracy. I'm especially not convinced about that "he's not good enough" and "work as a janitor" lines. The incident itself still seems something that requires an apology nevertheless. Of course Mitsuhiro Ichiki was there himself and saw that they were attempting to be funny, so he could probably lessen the impact, but that'd still be certainly disheartening.

I don't think they did this with spite, being deliberate in degrading him. I think it's only a horribly failed attempt at humor. Kokoro Connect is genius, I'm glad they've done a good job in adapting it, and I appreciate the other projects they've been involved in.

Since the OP did not link anything, here's one source I found:

I feel like the title is misleading.

- Companies don't "go under" when their stock prices take a hit.
- Sure the "value" of the company will be lower, but that doesn't mean the company will go bankrupt. This only affects investors and shareholders. Most likely, daily operations (like creating everyone's beloved Kokoro Connect) will continue as normal.
- Companies go under when they don't make profit, or when they don't have cashflow to pay employees.

Now, if all their commercial sponsors suddenly drop their animes, then ya, the company might be in danger. This seems like the company just took a publicity hit.

I have to agree with you. I doubt their go bankrupt any time soon, but their public image took a serious hit. Creating distrust among yourself and voice actors is not the smartest thing an anime company can do- it's like they didn't even think about the repercussions from this. I understand a prank now and then in the office, but to take it that far is unnecessary and just plain unprofessional.

Yeah, practical jokes are all well and good, but tricking someone who's looking for VA work into wasting their time in auditioning for a bogus role crosses the line. I respect Silver Link for making my favourite anime this summer in Kokoro Connect, but they've done a cruel thing to Mitsuhiro Ichiki, who was just looking for some honest work.
