I thought it was only in processed foods and americanized chinese takeout. I finally decided to look up a picture of MSG and to my surprise it's exactly what my mom uses, a kind of short grain type of salt. Have I been unknowingly consuming msg all my life? apparently it's a normal ingredient in many asian foods

im asian and when we were little, my mom used msg but after finding out that it causes cancer, we did not add any msg anymore and we put only little salt on our food. we also avoid those instant foods |

I love orange chicken (sweet&sour) and house noodles, so addicting.
I'm hungry now. Oh yeah, I think I get weak after I eat Chinese, all I want to do is lay down and sleep. Doesn't MSG cause cancer...or something?...Not that a lot of things already cause cancer... Idk if it's proven. |

I didn't win.

I've read that MSG is bad for you but it's what makes the food taste good? The place I order Chinese food from has the option of no adding MSG. People don't complain because they know what they're eating and those that do complain just don't eat it.

Msg also has another effect, which is an accelerated heart rate. So people like my mom with mitrol valve syndrome feel like they are having a heart attack.

Apparently it comes from seaweed. How could something that comes from seaweed be unhealthy?

MSG is something that is a sketchy subject to touch on. It is an amazing flavouring agent (available in the states as "Aji no Moto") but also has very well known side-effects if consumed in excess along with a diet deficient in antioxidants. Antioxidants stimulate cells to produce more peroxisomes, small, intracellular organelles which dispose of and break down dangerous free-radials such as aspartame and MSG.
MSG is something that has components that can be found in nature of course, but the compounds it comprises in most foods are usually a result of mixing with other ingredients. More or less, it's the fat and other elements of MSG-laced foods that are the unhealthiest. In moderation, it would be fine. |

from a perspective of someone whose been in advanced culinary program.
its like lard, delicious but can kill you or cause problems. eating it once in a while is ok as with most things. msg has a unique flavor. most people can't recognize the flavor but it is what is used to harmonize the flavor. it is not dangerous enough for ban. most chinese food eaten in america, are usually made for americans, the owners wouldn't eat it themselves. but do to the recent outrage, many fast food chinese places has cut it out but increase other crap. if you want good and healthy food, the basic alternative is to cook it yourself. there are hundred of ingredients to use to make something good. and you have to realize by now, people will make a huge issue out of nothing or from something small. there is a same ordeal to the use of peanut and other oils. there's even studies that prove that olive oil can be harmful. but olive oil is essentially a healthy staple. enough people learn about it and start telling people who don't understand much about it, will cause a riot. us humans learn by sharing info by mouth anyways, a book is just another tool use to spread the information. but honestly you should be watching what you eat to begin with. having to much of anything is bad. |

It has different effects on people. Like me, for example, I always feel like crap every time I eat Chinese food. I get the runs, my stomach is exploding. But I guess it depends on the amount I eat. I LOVE Chinese food, but I have to keep it portioned, quite small, unfortunately.
