I guess you could say that at times I use it for an escape. Like if I've had a really rough day for whatever reason, I'll just want to sit down and watch something. But I wouldn't say it's ever controlled me. Now on the other hand, playing games have done that to me in the past. Where I've pretty much put the rest of my life on hold to play a game. I don't do that much anymore which is probably for the best for my situation. But in regard to anime, mostly...

I watch it for the emotion it brings out in it's viewers. Can't say that I often laugh as hard or been as sad, or been as frustrated, or upset, or inspired, or whatever as I have been when watching anime. Very little other media can do that to me. All those above things are great things to experience.

I don't use it as an escape but I will use it just to chill. After a day of work dealing with people that make me lose faith in humanity it is something that puts me in a good mood again and just makes things relaxing. I have watched anime since I was a little kid and don't think
I ever used it to escape.

Anime is something I just watch for fun and sometimes because I feel like its my time. Games used to control the shit out of me as a kid but I also had game little buddies lol. I was a super game fan and constantly played games. Now that Im older I do not find much joy in playing them anymore but sometimes I find my self wanting to replay all the old nintendo games I played as a kid because it gives me comfort. I no that sounds weird but it kind of does or maybe makes me remember how good I had it. Even though Im as old as I am now I still bought my self a nintendo 3Ds lmao, but I don't play it much I even bought tons of games for it but still havn't really played them.

I watch it because it's entertaining.
I can't call it an escape especially when you're trying to copy a move that you know is absurd at the first place.

I mostly get attracted to watch an anime when it looks like it'll be possible to be adapted in western culture.
It's like the anime wasn't even made from Japan, if you know what I mean.
In my opinion, anime like Time Travel Tondekeman is a good example.

Not escaping as wanting to live in the anime I'm watching. I actually knew a girl who outspokenly
said to me she wished she lived in an anime where she was a protagonist in a shoujo story.

She actually said this: she wanted to be the most beautiful girl in the story who is constantly being wronged and a good looking guy saves her. Ironically she willfully got into a physical fight with someone and claimed cheat because the other person used their nails

Reality check please.

I watch anime to spur my own creativity. I try to critique what I'm watching and see if there were things that could have been better. Then I go back and review my own work to see if there are any holes that I need to fill and get rid of those 'Huh?' moments.
