Anime is just a hobby for me, and I haven't seen a new series at all in over 2-3 years. Movies are a bigger passion of mine.

It doesn't really control me in any way. I realize that I need to get my work and responsibilities finished before I can fully devote myself to enjoying my life, so that's what I do.

No worries, changed it for you.

On topic, I watch anime for the fun of it. It's something I can live without.

It definitely started that way, but now its a hobby. My life was really bad when I started watching anime, so I kinda escaped into my computer and all things anime for a few years since that's all that I could do, now I probably use work as an escape and anime as a hobby.

Nope. Anime is something that I enjoy in my free time, not depend on.

Yeah sometimes I use it as an escape but I wouldn't classify it as something I NEED to watch.

Like most things, it depends on the situation I am in. If I'm in a bad place I guess I would use anime as part of a regimen. For Ex: get good sleep, exercise, introspection, get outside, watch a good anime.

If I'm in a good place, sure some good anime would be nice.

Mostly though, some of the best storytelling in media is done using anime and it would be a shame to cut that off. Certainly better than 90% of American TV.

My question is who doesn't? When you're doing anything that you enjoy, you're escaping from life (work, bills, the norm). If you play a video game, you do it to escape what's going on in the real world. If you're reading a book, you do it to escape from the real world. If you watched a movie, TV show, etc...you're escaping from the real world. I don't see how anime is any different.

Even though many people don't realize it, they watch anime or read manga to escape from the real world. That's the whole point of entertainment, so you can forget about the troubles of real life and just enjoy yourself for that time. I'm not talking about confusing reality with fiction, I'm talking about just getting your mind off real-world problems and that's practically what entertainment is.

As for me, Yeah I definitely watch anime to escape the real world. Not like I confuse the 2 though, I know full well the differences between real life and fiction. But it takes my mind off of real life, even for an hour or so a day.

Everyone who says they don't probably don't even realize that they do it to escape from real-life. That's pretty much what anime and movies were invented for, to pass time and take your mind off things.

But at one point I really did rely on anime to escape life...practically because I didn't have very many friends growing throughout middle-school (that's when it started, I had plenty of friends in elementary and high school though). Now, even though I'm kind of an addict, I do it because I enjoy it, but not to escape from my current life...It's just pure fun, and I mainly watch comedies to give me a laugh (which is hard to do during real life).

I totally agree! Everyone I know who's not into anime, I try to tell them that some of the best story-telling, characters, action, etc is done in anime. Most of them just brush it off, but it's true. It's hard for me to enjoy many hollywood movies anymore because I have a high standard for entertainment because I need something to be as good (or as funny) as some of the best anime that i've watched...which most pale in comparison. The only story/plot in entertainment that I was really impressed by and was on that same level was Red Dead Redemption (a video game if you didn't know)...but other than that, it's hard to really think of many non-anime entertainment which had better story than anime.

I feel your pain dude. Been goading and poking a friend of mine to try some anime out on this site. I got him to watch a bit of it in the past and he liked it! The problem is catering to each persons taste I guess.

Hmmm .... well even though I do love me some anime I still think I like movies more. So overall, Anime movies are true treats for me. :D
I'm not sure what's going on in hollywood recently but this year has been filled with a lot of mediocrity speckled with glimpses of brilliance. There has been a lot of traction in indie movies but those can get seriously saturated with something I call "art fuck". Not sure if I can describe that aptly but it's like they sacrifice storytelling to go in some "New direction" which usually doesn't pan-out for me so well. It's kind of a crap-shoot in that regard.

and there is good stuff on TV here it's just getting to be more and more on premium channels (Game of Thrones, True Blood)

As for funny .... well in general I think that's probably what "we" do best. The only anime that had me laughing almost every episode was Gintama. There's still some solid stand-up performances but again, usually the best of those are on premium channels like HBO. It's a treat when it drizzles down to Comedy Central. Not to mention "The Daily Show" "The Colbert Report" "Louie" "How I Met Your Mother" and even the cheap thrills of "The Big Bang Theory"(used to really hate that show not sure how I got sucked in)

Yeah I'm a bit of a media addict LOL

It's not the only reason I watch anime, but yes I do watch anime sometimes to escape from life and the world in general. Unfortunately, some anime can depress me too, so I try to watch more cheerful ones.
