Live action movies and books are art forms as well, and for many people, they are a method of escapism. The same can be said for games, and addictions to any types of media are possible, to varying degrees. So the drug comparison is somewhat valid, at least as it applies for some people, and only in that particular context.

Then again, I've often joked in the past that, "Anime and games are my anti-drug; because who can afford drugs when there are new anime and games being released every month?"

Joking aside, back to the main topic: They're not so much an escape for me, as a part of who I am. I've been legally blind since birth, thus effectively home-bound, and I do all of my board game design work from home. I'm not published yet, but I'm getting there eventually! I also have familial obligations that make going out to socialize regularly...simply impossible right now. If any of you have taken care of a bed-bound adult family member full time, you probably have some idea of what my situation is like. (11-13+ hours a day, seven days a week, and no days off.) As a result of all of this, most of my current social interaction is online, as one might imagine. I still video/voice chat and talk on the phone, but the last time I had the opportunity to meet up with friends was literally a year ago, and they came in from out of state just to visit. I accept that this is how my life has to be for right now, and I don't think of it negatively.

I usually have some anime on while I work, and play games to wind down, when I get the chance. They're an integral part of what makes me who I am, and that passion for gaming is what will allow me to afford to travel again, eventually. So in that respect, they're not an escape from the world, but my means to afford to see more of the world.
