Just finished watching the final episode for season 1 of MGX and i must say, i'm impressed. This is the most refreshing anime i've watched in years. The whole drool thing bugged me for a while, but i got used to it. If you want to get out of the "Shonen(Big 3) Trap" or any genre in general, check this out .

Yeah, the drool bugged me but not enough to make me quit watching. I found it to be a real nice slice of life anime if the drool wasn't factored in, with some very sweet moments :3 I thought it was cute

This a great show once you get over the drool scenes. I really liked the main characters.

One of my all time favorites, but a bit of a "guilty pleasure" to be sure. I love the characters, especially Urabe, who I find to be a unique and refreshing character. The emphasis on relationship development and the way the two main characters grow to love one another more and more as the story goes on is fantastic! Far too many romance anime/manga are about the falling in love, with the two who love one another not realizing it until so close to the very end of the story that it is over before the real loving can begin. MGX gives us a view of what lies beyond the confession! I love that about it.

Another story like that is Kare Kano: His and Her Circumstances. It is quite different in a lot of ways, but the two main characters are in love and dating from the end of volume 1 (of the manga), giving the reader 20 volumes of the type of relationship development that MGX provides. The stories are so entirely different in tone that it is hard to think of them as being similar, but the fact that they both deal with the realities of being in a loving relationship and how a relationship can and must change over time, lest it be left behind as the people change, is a common theme. (I just finished reading the Kare Kano manga.)

Lousy art? the are style is a throwback to the 90's style which the story is set in. Disgusting plot? what's so disgusting about a high school guy in his first relationship ever trying to figure out the boundaries of the relationship, trying to build up a closer connection before deepening the bond.

Maybe I just don't get his point of view as well as you do. I dropped it after 3 or so episodes. What I saw disgusted me, but hay, if you enjoyed it. More power to ya!

Loved it, bought all the manga and the OVA. Hope for a second season! One of my faves for the year.

It is a common misconception that the story is set in the 90's. As far as I know, the mangaka has not said what the time period is for the manga (and thus the anime) but I would think it would be modern day. I realize that nobody has cell phones, so it seems like it is set in the past, but in the
there is mentions of buying concert DVDs and such, which would have been VHS or, better for geek appeal, Beta, if it were set in the 90's

The art is very old school, however. I can understand if it isn't to everyone's liking, but calling it lousy, especially considering the extreme background detail and the surreal dream environments, does show either a lack of attention to detail on the part of the watcher or such a strong bias against the "icky" factor that the person is unable to appreciate anything about the show because of the drool. The fact that the poster commented on "disgusting plot" suggests that the "icky" factor is what is driving the opinion.

@2HeartsBeatAs1 - Other than the drool, what about the plot did you find disgusting? The budding love relationship? The discussion of potential future sexual intercourse? The awkward attempts by Tsubaki to understand what it means to be in a relationship and what to expect now that he and Urabe are a couple? The surreal dream environments? The gradual relationship and character development?

Or is it just the drool? If so, that's fine, but I would not go around posting things about art and plot if the real issue is a lack of intestinal fortitude when it comes to the external exchange of bodily fluids. (In other words, if it makes you sick, which is alright. Lots of people, including fairly well respected reviewers couldn't get past the drool, but, almost universally, the art and plot development of the show was appreciated by those same critics that just couldn't enjoy it because it turned their stomachs.)
