A group of girls all pursuing one guy is such a cliche that it may not be possible to say who started it. It happens in reality, too. When I was in grade school, there was a guy named Shane that every girl in class adored. The rest of us might as well have been Quasimodo.

It might require help from the Japanese version of Google if you can find anyone who can read it to find anything resembling an answer.

Can't verify complete accuracy, but taken from - http://astronerdboy.blogspot.com/2011/05/why-harem-genre.html

"The father of the modern harem genre is widely considered to be the canon OVA series, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki. Indeed, before the term "harem" came into wide usage among fans, the term 'Tenchi clone' was often used to describe a harem title."

I know it's not the first time I've seen Tenchi Muyo! referenced as the father of the genre. The site also references "TAKAHASHI Rumiko-sensei's Urusei Yatsura" then on towards "Ranma 1/2" as main roots for the genre.

wow the article this person wrote is very informational. I was guessing it was Love Hina that was the first but its not old enough so I knew there were others i just couldn't figure it out.

I should have remembered about Tenchi Muyo Which I agree with the article as being the true original to modern harem.
