Gamer is an amazing film, and SOA is a great show! I'd love to go into a virtual game, but i'd be scared at the same time!

I agree with what you said, with the things you listed the idea of virtual reality like in SAO could only be a few years away.

If huge groups of people demanded that gaming companies developed virtual reality gaming equipment I'm sure they would be more motivated too. If the Oculas sells are good then that will show companies like Sony and Microsoft that people are into virtual reality.

You know Sony has a patient on a device from 2007 that not only is suppose to read the brain but using ultrasound is supposed to simulate the five senses in your brain. Yes, I am saying it can make you feel, taste, hear, see (obviously), and smell the tings in the game, plus it should be able to simulate secondary senses too (like balance, temp., acceleration, etc.) which is incredible. I am inpatient so I looked up the painted and am copying what they have write in the description. All in all, Sony claims it for medical uses, to relieve certain sickness and for though missing body parts and their related senses.

Edit:
tl;dr - Sony is hacking your mind

They will probably end up making it, it really isn't too far beyond our capacity currently. The biggest problem is figuring out how to read the signals since they are somewhat different in everyone, and then to feed false sensations to them. (blocking them is actually absurdly easy, you just need to trigger or mimic the same part of the brain that keeps us from trying to run around in our sleep when we are doing so in our dreams).

but yea, with all the research going on about the human mind it shouldn't be too long before we come up with something like this, certainly within our lifetimes. (and ironically probably before we come up with fully functional holograms).

I haven't personally played MMOGs being that my past computers and current one don't have enough power to do so, but if it was something like Sword Art Online I would be willing to try it. I love magic though so adjusting to just swordplay would be new for me, but a fun challenge. As far as someone hacking or that's not the right term... designing the system to lock you in there until you meet certain conditions like SAO, I would be scared that might happen....

Especially since anime crazy tends to be reflective of real life crazy. Yes, you can't pull off the same things you can in anime because one isn't real, but if someone figured out how to do so with a MMOG while everyone was was logged in with the nerve gear on from SAO, then you could be living out your anime fantasy...while murdering people mind you....

So I guess in the end I'm on the fence about it....

If it makes you feel safer, there are easy ways to get out of sword art that they never go into, because it would ruin the story, also some would take programming or engineering skill, and about half could not be done in the game, but it can be done. The easiest is to smash the headset before it can melt the persons brain. Other include using the main server to shut the game down and send the completion code for the final boss.

The governments were too scared that if they tried the creator, who was still at large, would send a command code they didn't know of to kill everyone before they were out of the game, or that they would trigger one of countless traps that had been left to hinder any progress.

Also, the NerveGear appears to have been rather... reinforced, smashing it was likely not possible without triggering an overload and killing the person.

The real trouble is that if they try anything and fail, every person left in the game will die, and they know it. Even if it was being done on an individual basis the creator had threatened to kill everyone if they tried anything like that. It was basically a case of yes, they probably could have gotten them out, but due to the risk no one wanted to suffer the political fall out if it failed, so they just waited on the sidelines. This is basically a hostage situation where the guy holding the hostages has no reason not to kill every last one of them at the drop of a hat.

Wow...I didn't know that there were any ways to get out of a situation like everyone is in, in SAO. I don't have the technological or engineering background to understand the methods further, but from the way you explained them, it seems perfectly plausible to escape that way. But like you said it would ruin the story and it would have been maybe 3 episodes instead of...well it will be 10 tomorrow and however many they decide to do after that.

Thanks for the info! Now I'm not as scared if that ever were to happen. Now i just need to get a buddy that has a programming and engineering background to party with me whenever I'm able to play an MMO. Another issue all together.

I worked for AT&T before retiring. I have a film that they show us of things that were possible and they were able to do but were not finically feasible to market at that time back in the early 1990s and virtual reality was one of them it was neat to watch. In other words it is possible but something else may come along before it becomes a reality.

Oh fun news, the Oculus Rift was able to complete its kickstarter (the VR headset, visual only)

and should be a good first step toward Sword Art Online.

Two hurdles left, Sony finishing the senor introduction device, and faster and more reliable internet connections.

I would not trust virtual reality gaming, especially if it requires some sort of connection to your brain or nervous system.

Imagine how many bugs, glitches, and exploits there are in today's games? Imagine how that could screw with your body.

This... but dude imagine if porn and stipclubs got into the game at this point... I think people would never leave home after that.

It was big in the 90's, it seemed. I never did get to try the Virtuality hardware. Might have been interesting, but I don't see it making a comeback these days... That's just me talking though. Who knows what game developers have up their sleeves for the future.
