The real breakthrough we need is the ability to 'hijack' the nerve impulses to and from the brain like the nerve gear does, Then we could possibly see something like SAOs full dive. As of now all these systems are still just intermediaries to the brain, we'll always be aware we're just playing a game, not to mention the computing power we would need for a near 1:1 simulation of a world like Aincrad on top of getting rid of the 'middle men' so to speak.

I'm guessing in about 50 years we could probably manage that, maybe not at the consumer level though.

I think so! Well I HOPE SO!! CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW AWESOME IT WOULD BE?!?!?
Like seriously people die everyday for useless and senseless stuff. Imagine just being able to go into a game and just stay in that new world where you can defy the basic principles of life

AR (Augmented Reality) is not that far off from the future. Since there are company like Song, Google, Nintendo, and Oculus. They are making their own version of AR machine, such as the Oculus Rift from Oculus, and Google Glasses from Google. Once AR machines have made into the market, it wont take long for a new gen of gaming, AKA Virtual Reality MMORPG something like SAO and .Hack .

Reality is an MMO, and ourselves are the character. We take time to train our brain to learn new skills and talents.

definitely, we will most likely have it in the next 10-30 years, scientists are learning a ton about nerves and the brain right now.
we can even see peoples dreams through their brains now.
Not only that but technology accelerates faster every year, who knows when we will have flying skate boards and stuff.

How can we see peoples dreams now

Hello Everyone...

For almost 1 year, we've been pouring our life into an exciting new project called Realms of Goldesia. A new MMO RPG which is being designed to be compatible with the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality headset. Check out Realms of Goldesia (http://kck.st/GGu124), An MMORPG that allows for total immersion through its skill-based class system, player-driven world & support for Oculus Rift.

Skills are increased through use, rather than by gaining experience. Players live their choices. Players create their own stories, ones that would shape the events on realms. ROG merely provides an epic setting filled with catalysts for adventure. No grinding, no questing, no predetermined destinies - a realistic & dynamic world shaped by players. Support us today, back the project and get your own goods, or share a link on your social sites for your friends to take peek.

It'd mean the world to us if you can visit our project page & share our project with your community and backers by a simple comment or update. We are also trying to kick forward any and all projects via kickingitforward.org. We appreciate any and all support.

Thank you,
Aartiee Lallwani & Brianna Przybysz

Yeah, and gravity is a myth.

As for the OP. Computer game graphics has been on halt since DX10. DX11 API is the latest, and rumors has it there won't be a DX12 API, and that they're going back to OpenGL. The biggest problem in VR gaming is to efficiently utilize REM sleep, while at the same time, not causing the user psychosis. It'll be a long- long while before anyone figures that one out.

Taking it you've never heard of Virtual Boy. Also, there are a series of simulations used to train various agencies that are an interactive virtual world. Some arcades that are still around have virtual simulations too.
