Final Fantasy games are not related to each other, except for FF#-2. So, there is nothing in the previous games that you would need to know. That being said, all of them (besides the MMOs) are better than FFXIII.

i absolutely ADORED final fantasy XIII. They're all stand alone games unless mentioned otherwise, but if you're a person who likes and understands emotional trauma and personal growth you picked a good game =)

at first I had a hard time with it because it didn't necessarily draw me in, plus the exploration was highly restricted. but after playing it through completely i fell in love with the characters. square enix does a great job bringing the characters and storyline to life. everyone is going to have their own opinion on it, but i do believe that SE took a step in the right direction. i thought it was an inspirational game and Lightning Farron is BOSS. if the gameplay and story line was that good, i can only imagine what FFVERSUS is going to be like. *stares off into the brilliance of the Final Fantasy world with starry eyes*

Lightning Farron taught me that no one is an island and you can always make it to your destination with the encouragement and help of your loved ones.

Hope this helped!

The only true sequels you need to worry about are FF4: The After Years (very worth playing), and FFX-2. There are also a few spinoffs that play into other games (most notably the FF7 saga), but they're not worth worrying about. Then again, FF13 is, like Quinex said, is probably one of the worst games in the series. (I'd argue FF8 might be worse, but they're both kinda close.) Definitely try some of the older ones if you want the best experience; I recommend 4, 5, or 6. (Actually, I recommend all of them. The series kinda nosedives at 7.)
