Held, own, and know how to use effectively. I was fortunate to have private lessons in my youth. I own several and none are purely decorative -- I will not waste money on a cheap blade.

I have. Own a katana, display only. And a machete. Too many of my friends and company have asked to hold it, so I had to put it up high, away from hands.

Yes My dad has an old Spanish Bull fighter sword :)

I get that its fun to own one, but whats the point of knowing how to use it? I see some of you had training, but for what? Unless you do kendo its no use. Its not like the world is gonna be taken over by zombies, and you have to use swords instead of guns when killing them in order to not attract more of them.

I don't see why you think kendo should be more reasonable to learn than any other. People learn so that the styles aren't lost or for the discipline it will still give them. They learn for competitions or even just because it interests them. There are plenty of things people learn that they will never need to know or use.
As for the topic, yes, I have held a sword as I own a few katana and plan to collect many more of them over time.
