I don't see why you think kendo should be more reasonable to learn than any other. People learn so that the styles aren't lost or for the discipline it will still give them. They learn for competitions or even just because it interests them. There are plenty of things people learn that they will never need to know or use.
As for the topic, yes, I have held a sword as I own a few katana and plan to collect many more of them over time.
Well i guess we got a different opinion regarding that then. I see the merit in learning something for fun only if it can be used in every day life situations.

The only real sword (non-cheap replica, but still ceremonial) that I've used was a saber for JROTC drill team in high school. Sort of like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzg2egUKW_s

I've held manys swords ...only cause the teacher was allowing the students pass giant heavy swords in class during his lecture, I don't remember the lecture only the swords.

I have I've been doing martial arts all my life Including Kendo and some western Fencing. I have a few family heirlooms (Swords) I have in my house to. Not to mention the other random ones. |

I have about 6 katanas. 2 are crappy but the rest I paid quite a bit for. I also took kenjutsu, so yeah I've held swords quite a bit...
Oh yeah, I also have a full size replica of Ichigo's Zanpakuto Zangetsu. That fucker is heavy...
And an authentic nodachi. Yeah I spend way too much money on swords...
