My friend sells weed and his family knows about it, so for every birthday he gets a katana since he was 17 (he lives in a bad neighbourhood and carry around bear spray). He has about 8 of em >< They're heavier than i thought!

I've used many kinds of swords. I was in a European heavy arms combat and jousting theatrical Troup, the Seattle Knights. I was a ground pounder not a jouster. I trained there for about 1.5 years. I worked my way up from using wooden sword to metal. We fought did both freestyle and staged fights. It was pretty fun doing the fights with 60+ pounds of armor and one or two weapons. I had a helmet and could take headshot. I fought with swords, daggers, maces, axes, flails, shields, spears, staves, and two-handed claymores.

I also did some kendo in martial arts and worked with a cutting sword as well. We did a little work practicing cutting techniques on rolled up bamboo mats. It's hard to get the angle, speed, and power application right on that.

What manuals did you follow when using swords? Must be hard moving around with all that armor, have never tried it. Sounds awesome!

Have a longsword (feder) for sparring

The training was tweaked for the stage, i.e. slowing down and making sure to hold blades so the audience can see them, but the most quoted book was Medieval Combat by Hand Talhoffer.

It's easier then you thing to move with that much armor on. If you get then weight distributed properly it doesn't feel nearly as heavy as you would thing. You want to get move of the weight sitting on your hips so that its not pulling on your shoulders it's good. Also, using soft armor like chainmail instead of breastplates is more comfortable because it moves with you better. Of course you're more susceptible to impact injuries then. Below is a picture of me before I played a the Kinect dancing game. The only think I'm missing is my weapons. :)

I have held rattan sticks before (we had a guest instructor teach us eskrima for a day at the Martial Arts school I used to attend) I have also held daggers but I can't recall ever holding a full-size sword of any sort.
