Aria, Clannad, and jousei dramas such as Usagi Drop, Honey and Clover (and possibly Kids on the Slope)
that only works for some tastes but if some more action is required then Fullmetal Alchemist or Katanagatari
im just mumbling my favorites here
but everybody likes hentai

Something like Hikaru no Go if they are into board games and awesome soundtracks. It's hard to beat HnG's soundtrack. ^_^

Depends on your friend's taste, and really why he says he hates anime.
If he thinks it's childish or ridiculous, then an ecchi-style anime wouldn't be a good pick.
Something like Death Note or Fate/Zero might be good then.
If he likes some emotional depth to a story, or thinks that anime is defined by shows like DBZ, then a show like Clannad, Anohana, or Time of Eve might be good.
If he is inclined towards aesthetically "interesting," or artsy type stuff, then stuff like Gankutsuou or a lot of the stuff by Shaft would be good. Although these are not as safe picks as the other ones, so I wouldn't recommend it.
Baccano! and Cowboy Bebop are a pretty good mix of all of the above if you're not really sure.
If I had to pick anime to appeal to the general public, I would say Death Note or Baccano!

if it's a guy, I always recommend 'Death Note', it hasn't failed me yet.
For girls, any quirky anime, usually a romantic comedy. I suggest 'Shuffle'

I would suggest general action anime for the typical guy that "hates anime" but that isn't as long as FMA and FMA: Brotherhood in case they got bore. Perhaps anime like Darker Than Black, I think it helps to have them watched dubbed anime before starting on subbed anime, simply because I feel it takes an anime fan to really like subbed animes, but that's just my opinion.

Cowboy Bebop and Baccano! were practically made for people like your friend. Both are very high standard and have a western feel to them, especially Baccano which is actually set in America.

Something to keep in mind: If he hates anime there is no way he will watch subbed anime. So if you really feel like helping suggest things with a solid dub that the VAs actually did more than read from the script half-heartedly. Just sayin'.

Really though, like others have said it all depends on his/her tastes in what they like to watch. The ones above are examples of anime on the mature side of the spectrum (some more than others). Most of them if not all are dubbed so he doesn't have to glance at the bottom of the screen every scene.
