Most Influential Anime Characters

Alright now don't bite my head off, as I understand she's not an "anime" character, but she IS a drawn character from Japan... how about Hello Kitty?

HK certainly stands as the most iconic, popular, beloved, and recognizable character to ever come out of Japan, and paved the way for all other Japanese sensations, such as Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and DBZ. There is not a single type of product on the planet that has not been made in a Hello Kitty variety, hence : http://www.kittyhell.com

Are we talking influential to anime or influential to pop culture?

Anime - I'm going with Sailor Moon. Been 20 years and she's still taking my money. Also pioneered the entire magical girl genre.

Pop Culture - If Hello Kitty isn't anime-enough of an answer, I'm going with Pokemon. Masses of parents for the past 20 years have raised children who were at some point obsessed with Pokemon. DBZ may have been earth-shattering to those who watched, but my parents certainly have no clue who the hell Goku is... they damn sure know a Pikachu when they see one though.

Actually, I think Hello Kitty did have her own anime! But anyway, great choice. Even Pokemon (though I hate it) is incredibly well known. But yeah, Sailor Moon would still be the number one choice.

My most influential characters for me would have to be Naruto and Natsu from Fairy Tail. These two have one thing in common and its that they never give up even when the odds are against them. They never abandon their friends and keep fighting even when all hope is lost. They don't back down when there is a challenge and instead face it head on. Not only do they have strength, they give strength and hope to the people around them and make them believe even when times are rough.

I wonder if any of you guys agree with me on this.

I have to list five people that I found to be really influential not just for me, but those who probably watched it before.. most of them are very similar though

1. Onizuka Eikichi (22 years old) - He's probably the best teacher in life... The main protagonist of GTO, or Great Teacher Onizuka, he is probably one of the dumbest person in terms of academics (but proves everyone wrong later on). Every person he encountered during his time at the Holy Forest Academy has been changed for the better, which made him a very influential person throughout the school. All of his op and ed songs for the anime was pretty damn good too (just a side note).

2. Bossun or Sakata Gin - since both of them does the same job in different time era, I would put them on the same number. Both of them are usually a slacker, but when everyone needs them, they make sure they do it with their best abilities. I prefer Gin over Bossun though, just because of the action in his anime. Bossun is in the anime Sket Dance, and Gin is the protagonist of Gintama.

3. Light Yagami or Katsuragi Keima - how are they even similar to each other? both of them are self proclaimed gods of their anime. While Yagami is influencing the whole town (or probably Japan) with his death note, Katsuragi Keima is manipulating girls, demons, and goddesses for his own personal gain.. both of them are truly a god (or so they say).

Kenshiro... why? He along with his brother Toki invented and perfected the concept of Kung Fu Jesus over a DECADE before the internet. Not to mention his series directly lead to Dragonball/Z transforming from a comedy adventure series into an action marital arts series in order to regain readership & popularity. it also inspired the series epic powerups/screaming matches as well as goku's Super Saiyin transformation. Dragonball Z overall Aped the fist of the north star series rather extensively.

Kenshiro was definitely the first I thought of. So much of Kenshiro can be seen in any shounen fighting anime. Silent badass protag with super-powerful fighting techniques which he only uses in the name of justice, quest for revenge, sibling rivalries, fighting people five times his size, the "shounen power-up to fight next epic bad guy" trope...at this point, most of the fighting shows around are copying the copies of the copies of Kenshiro, but yeah, its still there.

Yup, That's why he is a Codifier on TV Tropes, He and his series practically INVENTED many of the cliches & tropes now taken for granted.
