This thread is for anime that hooked you from the very beginning. By that, I don't mean the first couple of episodes, but the very beginning! Before the OP and the opening credits rolled! Shows that have such a great lead in, that you are drawn into the story right from the start!

For me, there are several, but the ones that really got me are:

3. Waiting in the Summer (Ano Natsu de Matteru)

Part of what got me about Waiting in the Summer, was the fact that I had absolutely no clue going in that it was a science fiction show. All of the advance press about the show just talked about it as a high school love pentagon romance. There was no mention of the science fiction element or the connection to Please Teacher, other than the obvious fact that the same writer did both. But the real draw wasn't the space ship crashing, it was the monologue by Kaito as he fiddled with his grandfather's old video camera. The commentary on people "journeying into people's hearts" after they die was so touching and so much like my own worldview, that it drew me like a moth to a flame.

2. Toradora!
Toradora! Opening scene on YouTube

There exists in this world something no one has ever seen.

It's gentle and so very sweet that it only takes a glimpse to make a person crave it.

That's why this world has kept it hidden.

Making it difficult to obtain.

But one day, it will be found.

By the one person who is meant to find it.

Because that's how it works.

This opening dualog, switching back between Ryuuji and Taiga, is one of the finest pieces of single effect prose in anime and light novels. (The manga, sadly enough, doesn't have it.) It sets the tone so perfectly for the show, with the theme of searching for that one special someone who can see you for who you really are, see past the superficial nonsense that pigeon holes people into a public, or even private, image that covers up the real person deep inside, see the true worth and true nature of your inner self, see all your imperfections, all your quirks, all your insecurities, and love you, none the less! That is what it's all about when it comes to romance, people!

1. Otome Youkai Zakuro

The hauntingly beautiful and surprisingly violent opening scene of Otome Youkai Zakuro was all I needed to see to know that I would love this show! As it turns out, it became one of my all time favorites, just like the other two on the list.

Before the opening bars of the wonderful "Moon Signal" by Sphere ever graced my speakers, I was already taken in by this wonderful show! In short, I was bewitched!

Black Rock Shooter! It was short as an anime but I loved the distinctive art style behind it. Although there isn't really much to it the entire thing is one big set piece portraying the invisible conflicts between people and their emotions.

Ya, Another had a really great intro.

Full Metal Alchemist (the original) probably has my favorite intro.

But I have to say... Hourou Musuko had such an amazing music and intro that it made me watch an entire series with a subject matter I normally wouldn't be interested in.

I remember not thinking anything about Bebop's intro the first time, but whenever that scene really puts me in the right mood whenever I re-watch the series.

If I remember correctly, the start of Hayate No Gotoku set the tone for the series pretty well.

I would say probably Elfen Lied, Hell Girl, Bakemonogatari, and Code Geass.

Higurashi also had a catchy OP.
