There are already helmets that can (somewhat) read your thoughts, http://emotiv.com/ I remember after watching a talk about that technology thinking about the NerveGear, I don't think that means we would have NerveGear like technology 10 years from now though. But who knows we might actually have such technology in the next 50 years.

Nerve gear always reminds me of Nerf( those foam shooting guns) haha.
Pretty awesome that there's something like that out there even if it's at the most basic level.
Don't think i'll trust it after SOA though o.o.

Actually 10 years may not be that far fetched. Technology makes advances in leaps and bounds. Think back 10 years ago in 2002. Who had an HDTV? Pentium 4 had just come out, so had the first ipod. My dual core processor smart phone can out perform a pentium 4., and its considered obsolete.

IBM and a company called D-Wave systems have claimed breakthroughs in Quantum computing and some Aussie scientists claim that it is only 5 - 10 years away. The leap in computing power that Qbit processors promise may be able to produce Real AI's.

It's only a matter of time.

Quantum computers are more potential for faster loading speed

Its one of the main thing

Thanks for sharing this it's a fun site.

Their predictions will end up being more wrong than right only because it is hard to factor in Human intuition, Human ingenuity and unimagined technology. Some of Humankinds advances also happened completely by accident.

Plus their predictions ignore some existing tech that will end up having tremendous impact on the development of other tech.

All in all, definitely worth looking at.

Head Mounted 3D Display != Virtual Reality. "Oh I see"
I will pass until someone really figures out virtual reality, but that is going to require a man/machine interface.

Virtual reality is, plainly speaking, seeing an imaginary world, rather than the real one. Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, feeling. The imaginary world is a simulation running in a computer. The sense data is fed by some system to our brain.

current development : Seeing and so called "hearing"?

I agree with you but there hits point where technology takes even longer to develop. There was supposed to be hovercrafts in 2015 according to Back to the Future. Not like they were saying it'd happen, but I wouldn't say 50 years to make SAO, or at least I hope not... I'd want to die knowing I play "real virtual reality". But I'm sure it'd take longer than 10 years to create something as realistic as SAO. (Obviously not to the point of dying for real.) But you got to know, SAO is a device that puts you into a stasis of a dream like reality, not like the Oculus Rift coming out soon, where it's virtual when you put on the headset and you're still awake, but where you're actually asleep, in a coma like state. I don't know the details cause we're basing everything from what we know in SAO. However, I believe that you don't even know what's going on with the real you, while in SAO. So to make technology like that, I believe will take ALOT of time... I may be wrong it could come out within 10 years. I just find the complexity of SAO to be far beyond our technology.
Even in SAO, it was said they were in that game for months? Or is that wrong? How did they even eat when they were trapped? Unless fed through a tube at the hospital...

They were actually in the game for about two years. Comatose patients and those with persistent vegetative states have been kept alive much longer. All of the players had been moved to hospitals in a two hour window per the book.

I have to say I am a bit disappointed at the lack of flying cars. We are on the cusp pf a technological golden age. I think with the advances in the GRIN technologies that are just around the corner (GRIN = Genetic, Robotics, Information tech, Nanotech) we will see things no one has even dreamed of yet. I will say this, the complexity of the system in SAO could not be accomplished with a helmet that transmits external to the body. I think there would need to be a direct link to your nervous system via implant..

The ramifications of technology that could override your nervous system from an external transmission are frightening.
