Hi everybody, I hope all of you are having a great time on this site!

I would like to ask you: What is the best anime on this season so far?
I would like to know your opinion based on the quality of the anime, and try to avoid favoritism on the series that you feel sympathy for. I know this could be very subjective, but also I think this could help people to choose the next anime to watch because of his quality rather because of his popularity.

I hope this have a lot of comments, and also I hope you find this helpful to improve your entertainment time spent here.

Regards and good luck!

My list of the current season would be...

5.- Humanity has decline: 7.5
4.- Poyopoyo: 8.0
3.- Kokoro Connect: 8.5
2.- Sword Art Online: 8.5
1.- Yuruyuri: 9

I'm watching this animes right now, and I know some of them still have a lot of episodes to deliver, but right now this is my ratings.

Edit: Please don't double post. -starry

jinrui suita shimashita, definitely something you shouldn't miss,...
the art is rather unusual the episodes are aired in non-chronological order which complements with the randomness of the show,...
the MC is awesome because of her sarcastic attitude and indifference though she has no name.
go and see for yourself^^

i think SAO is a given...

so jinrui suita shimashita or humanity has declined is quite under-rated cause only few are watching it, i think?

Well, it is practically impossible to divorce popularity from quality, and even harder to separate personal preference from quality. In other words, quality judgments are always subjective. In addition, since I am not watching all of the shows, my list will obviously be biased.

That said, my personal list of the best currently airing series, in terms of overall quality, including art, animation, scriptwriting, and design:
4. Kokoro Connect

This show is generally solid in many areas without standing out too much in most.. the background art good, but not astounding; the character designs are very attractive, but have a feeling of "been there, done that" and just seem like over-used designs; the animation is generally well done, but sparse. Where it shines is in the writing and pacing. The show's writers, or more likely the original author of the light novels, know how to put together a story arc. The introduction of each twist heartseed throws at the kids, the complications that arise from the twist, character revelations resulting from said complications, and eventual resolution are all handled extremely well. Sure, there is a bit of a deus ex machina feeling to the way each arc is resolved,
And there is a kind of reverse deus ex machina feeling to the entire set-up, but the guts of the show are well written and the way the things heartseed does to the group brings out their inner demons for all to inspect and deal with is very nicely done.

In addition, the characters come across as authentic, not plastic. They don't seem like cookie cutter versions of some other show's characters, but individuals. They also interact with each other in a very realistic way. The banter between them as they tease each other and joke around is always very fresh and realistic.

3. Sword Art Online

Excellent action animation and character designs. In particular, the variety of designs for both characters and monsters in the game are impressive. The background art is also very well done, with a nice variety on the different floors, yet a sense of connectedness and consistency too. You never feel like the scenery is inconsistent with the way game scenery for a complex virtual reality world like this should be done. (I wish I could say is done, but, alas, we'll have to wait for that!) The place where it occasionally falls flat is in the screenwriting, with some fairly poorly written scenes and some questionable choices in terms of pacing and side-story to main-story balance.

2. Tari Tari

My favorite new show of the Summer 2012 season, Tari Tari shines on multiple levels. The character designs, while similar in many ways to Hanasaku Iroha, are extremely attractive and stand out in many ways. (I actually was very surprised how different Sawa is from Nako, for instance, when I went back and watched a few scenes from HI. When the show started, there were a lot of comparisons between the character designs, but when I actually look at them side by side, I see that they have common elements, but are actually not that similar. The writing is extremely solid, if a bit cheesy at times, but the cheese seems intentional. It is also highly predictable in terms of telegraphing where it is going several episodes in advance, but that is also done with intent as opposed to being a failing of the script. This show isn't trying to surprise or fool you, it wants you to see where it is going, understand the character's problems as they unfold, anticipate them, agonize over them, and feel them deep in your gut.
The characters are also all very believable and seem real. A trait shared with Kokoro Connect. The authentic interactions between the characters, especially the scenes where a group of them are talking, with multiple conversations blending into a natural cacophony of discussion, is very hard to follow in subtitles, but adds to the realism of the show, seeming like the way a real group of kids would who happened to run into each other on the street, for instance, would actually behave.

However, the biggest winner in quality for this show is the art. The scenery is so vivid and alive that it feels like they are putting animated characters in front of live action footage at times. The stunning beauty of everything in the show makes it shine above most of the other shows currently on the air.

1. Hyouka

It is not available in the US Streaming community, and not a "new" Summer season show, but Hyouka is the leader in terms of quality, in my opinion. The show has consistently excellent background art; wonderfully written characters; well executed story arcs; fantastic character designs; and astoundingly well done animation. It is wonderfully wrought, plain and simple.

Raphow

Hi there!

I think humanity has decline is under rated as well, as the anime has shown no fear of trying no mainstream ways to develop the plot and even less fear on the peace of the dialogues, is easy to understand why this anime is not the cup of tea of everybody. However, I applaud this show for having the courage of doing it.

Regards.

Hi Zensunni,

I agree with you, is very hard to separate the personal feelings that attach us to certain shows, I also agree that at the very end the opinions will probably not be objective about the quality. But I also hope that the opinions and critics gather on this forum help us to choose a good anime, regardless the genre, or popularity. And would be great having more well based arguments just like you did!

I hope I read you soon.

Regards.

If you want to read more, you could check out my relatively new blog: The Zen Of .... I have reviews of a few older series, as well as a couple of the current season shows. More will appear as I have time and energy to type them.

Incidentally, my list in terms of "favorite" for the season is as follows:

1. Tari Tari
2. Hyouka
3. Kokoro Connect
4. Sword Art Online

I recognize Hyouka's excellence in terms of overall quality, but Tari Tari wins my heart for its honest and potent emotional impact. For example, after episode 6, I had turned the ED of that episode into an MP3 and was listening to it as I was laying in bed. I nodded off and started to dream. (Due to contextual information that could be a spoiler for the story of Tari Tari, the remainder of this post is in spoiler blocks.)

2. Space Brothers -8.5 (threw it in here even though it's technically not this season.)
3. Sword Art Online - 8

Really wish Hyouka would have been picked up by CR.

Hagure Yuusha no Estetica , "Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero", is the one I'm finding the most fascinating overall. I need to tackle Sword Art Online again, since I've seen so many good comments about it, but it didn't really grab me on the first try.

I'm enjoying both "Humanity Has Declined" and "Binbogami Ga!" as well, so I'll put them down as my tie for second place.

I'm ticked off that nobody is streaming "Hyouka" legally. I've been limiting myself to legal sites the last couple years, as a matter of principle, but once in a while there is a reputedly great series that I can't find anywhere except in pirated form.

My own favorite for summer 2012 has got to be:

1. The Ambition of Oda Nobuna (my own personal preference)

A more non-biased view on quality for me would be:

1. Tari Tari

2. Kokoro Connect (Tied)

2. Sword Art Online (Tied)

^ -These three are still in my top faves this season anyway-

I will check out Hyouka and a couple others that were released this season soon
