we all had those moments when we thought one person was from this ethnicity but that person actually turns out to be from a different one. average faces across the asian culture as the computer generated faces from samples of people from each ethnicity shows why it isn't an easy job.
which ethnicity do you always mix up. for example i still have a tough time telling an indonesian apart from a filipino if i were just to base it on their faces.
p.s. i hope people won't take this the wrong way.

burmese

cambodian

chinese

filipino

japanese

korean

mongolian

taiwanese

thai

vietnamese

Well, Asians do have very close features no matter if they're Chinese, Japanese...etc. Vietnamese, Cambodian...etc. usually looks somewhat different though, but still it's obvious they're Asian.

All the people in the pictures look sweet though.

I'm shit when it comes to that sort of thing.

For example:

I can't tell an Italian from a French person

I can't tell a Korean from a Japanese person

I can't tell a Nigerian from a person from Zimbabwe.

Unless I know someone personally, there is no way I can tell where they come from based on looks alone.

I can't differentiate Asians based on looks. Just like a can't tell people from European countries apart just by looking at them. Maybe if I hear them speak I'll know but there's a limit to how well you tell languages apart as well. For example by speech I'd differentiate between an American and someone from the UK or Australia, Someone from Ireland and someone from Scotland, someone from France and someone from Spain. Someone from Spain and someone from Italy. Germany/Poland, Denmark/Norway/Iceland, Japan/Korea.

I wouldn't however be able to clearly differentiate between China/Taiwan, Philippines /Indonesia, Burma/Vietnam or any other country/language. Keeping in mind how many countries and languages there are in the world that's quite a small scope of differentiation.
But if one just took the time to look and listen, comparing rhythm and sound it'd be surprisingly easy to differentiate between nationalities by language without actually learning it. By looks however, no matter what the average person from any country looks like I don't think it means a lot to the individual. Especially not to the individual who always gets pegged for someone of another nationality based on how they look.

The only problem using language to tell people apart is taking into account those who are speaking a second language etc.

You can't really differentiate the asian populace purely from looks. What you have is purely an average based on nationality.

Southern Chinese look different from northern. You can get a general idea of which general area they may be from such as the Indochinese(Vietnamese, Burmese, Thai etc.) region or those with some polynesian(Filipinos, Indonesians, malays) but even that is not even that useful. Many Filipinos have some Spanish descendents while many Malays have Indian ancestors. The multitude of ethnicities in China itself makes it silly to give an "average" look.

This is about as useful as trying to tell a Swede apart from a Nord or a German apart from a Pole. Many people share similar features.

It's all superficialities anyway.

I assume all commenters so far are caucasian

I can usually tell if someone's origins are Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, or Thai. Occasionally Taiwan or Singapore. I haven't seen many people from other places. The Thai people really didn't look like the pictures, though...

For some reason I always mistake half-Japanese-half-caucasians for full caucasians. There was this lady I knew for about 6 years before I found out her mom was Japanese, and I was like You mean you're not all white?

Being able to recognize racial features depends on what kinds you saw a lot of when you were growing up. The way it's easier for a child to learn phonemes of other languages. I can tell most Asians apart, but to me all hispanics look the same.

You're better than I am and I'm Filipino. I looked at the images and pretty much would have mistaken any of them for another.

The filipinos, vietnamese and indonesians look really alike to me. You can't tell apart a Taiwanese and a Chinese because basically they are ALL chinese and they look the same. You can tell by the accent though.
