I know the people above have been arguing that every season is filled with mediocre shows, but I really do feel that this season is particularly bad. Usually there's one or two shows which are fun or interesting, but I can't find anything that stands out here. It all just seems the same dull formulaic stuff. I like Pet Girl, but even that isn't really that fun of a show, especially when you compare it to My Little Monster from the fall or Moyashimon from the summer.

It used to be that even if the new shows were dull, you could fall back on the long runners like Bleach, Sket Dance, Beelzebub, or Gintama, but they're not around anymore...

There's quality and there's genre ~ a season with the Chihaya Furu sequel starting and Shin Sekai Yori continuing qualifies as a season "with good shows" ,,, but if shojo and actual Science Fiction are not your cup of tea, the fact that those are two quality shows would be beside the point.

As far as longer running series, you got your Hunter x Hunter which has a long run ahead of it, and Saint Seiya Omega which AFAIR is heading toward the 1yr mark.

Something interesting to note - the Nicovideo version of Senyu is 6m30s long, while Crunchyroll's stream is 4m30s (this is presumably the same length as the TV broadcast).

The only difference is a 1:30 opening and a 30 second preview of the next episode.

I recently said Chihayafuru was shojo too but was corrected. It actually runs in a josei magazine. I think it is sort of between the two, it is mature for shojo but on the young end for josei. At any rate, it is great stuff! Watch the first season now which starts out shojo for the first few episodes.

Saint Seiya Omega and Quality in the same post? Sigh, I wanted to like that show but dropped it recently, just couldn't stick it out even after investing nearly a day of my life on it so far. Too cheesy for me... Which is saying something as I love cheese.

Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Shinsekai Yori, Space Brothers, Blast of Tempest, Saki Side of A, Polar Bear Cafe, Magi are all great continuing series. Most will end in the spring.

Hunter x Hunter, Fairy Tail, Gintama, Naruto, popular long running series continue.

Unlimited Hyobu Kyosuke, Roman, Maoyu and Oreshura seem high quality after their first episodes.

Love Live!, D.C. III, Cuticle Detective Inaba and Amnesia are visually delicious, fun, light hearted series. Great music too.

Yama no Susume short seems really well done.

Osaka Okan, Mangirl!, Ai Mai Mi, Senyu, Wooser are all really funny shorts, great 3-4 minute pick me ups.

I am really looking forward to the rest as they premiere.

I think quality is there. If you don't like it then it must be because your genre is missing. The palett suits in Vividred Operation maybe the closest thing we get to mecha anime this season.

Closest thing to Ghost in the Shell right now is Psycho - Pass which is running on Funimation.

Check out Roman for a comedy samurai series.

Cowboy Bebop is fairly unique, copied by Serenity/Firefly. Seriously, one of my favorite shows of 2012, Bodacious Space Pirates may be one of the closest things we have had to Cowboy Bebop. Space opera at its finest with pirates, school girls, maid cafes, a veritable parfait of anime tropes and yet somehow the whole show works wonderfully.

Not much seinen anime made anymore. Nazo no Kanojo X / Mysterious Girlfriend X, BTOOOM! Chitose Get You! Jormungand. Nakaimo and other imouto shows. Poyopoyo. So I Can't Play H. Space Brothers. Upotte. What can you do but switch to shonen, shojo and josei?!!

Well, there you go, the Japanese do classify by demographic, not genre, and it targets office ladies on their commute to work more than HS girls ~ it is, in any event, a "chick flick".

Saint Seiya Omega and Quality in the same post?

But not the same paragraph! I personally am skeptical that some of the long running series mentioned as no longer being there (some of which are still there) consistently ring the bell in quality terms, but long running fight-ke-bobs are not my thing, so I dropped it after a single episode.

Yes, this was my point. I've been an SF fan decades longer than I've been watching anime, and if the late 90's were a bit of a golden age for SF anime, we are going through a decent period right now, after a bit of a dry period in the middle of the last decade ~ a fact effectively masked in the US during the US boom, since US companies were combining licenses of two and four year old series with licenses for eight and twelve year old series.

Given that it is an Aniplex title, it is no surprise, but Vividred will also be offered on Hulu (and Hulu Plus):
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/press-release/2013-01-08/aniplex-of-america-to-simulcast-the-animated-series-vivired-operation-on-hulu-hulu-plus-and-crunchyroll

That could be a minor benefit to non-premium members in the United States (since Hulu offers up to 480p) or anyone that might be experiencing streaming issues with CR.

I suppose that seeing it in the Winter Anime Spotlight on ANN should have clued me in, but I still did not expect that anyone would stream that. I hope that Crunchyroll got the first season too since I can't watch the 2nd half without the 1st half. Awesome pickup, and I also second that hope that CR is able to get Puchimas.

EDIT: Publisher is Starchild/King Records. That must mean that Sentai has licensed it(or they got a package deal with some other catalog titles that King Records was involved with).

Showgate means almost certainly a Sentai licensed show.

Bravo, Crunchyroll, you managed to give me "I didn't expect that" surprise twice today.

Shouldn't this be in the Fall 2012 thread as the latest simulcast announcement ever???

I don't mind though, this is awesome news! Thanks again, Crunchy!

I really wanted an image of a pig taking off from an aircraft carrier, but no joy.

Seriously, if anyone had predicted that these two would (apparently) be CR's final two simulcast announcements for the season, and both announced on the same day, I would have thought they were under the influence.

Hmm...good point. Now I'm wondering where I should list it.

I suppose since CR lists it in the winter lineup, I'll certainly list it here, but I'll probably also go back and add it to the fall topic (with a comment, of course, regarding the record late start).

Funimation has a well-deserved reputation of being late with their simulcast announcements. We know that somebody licensed Senran Kagura from a Japanese tweet and since it is a "Boobs for the win" anime, I expect that Funimation will announce that very soon. Maybe tomorrow so they can at least announce the same day as Haganai Next. I also fully expect that Funimation will stream the new Hetalia series since that is money in the bank for Funi. That would give Funi 5 simulcasts for Winter(2 continuing, and 3 new ones) and I expect that Funimation will make a bold push for around 8-10 in Spring
