How else do you expect me to react to beautifully idealized romantic situations? Is that shit supposed to be enjoyable? Why the bloody hell do I keep subjecting myself to that crap? /rant

The difference is often in the details. For instance, Toradora has its faults, but it does a lot of unexpected things right. There's more character development than you might expect, and not everything is played for laughs or for drama.

That said, it's good to get into multiple genres, categories, and fandoms. Just looking at what's on Crunchyroll right now, there's satire (Humanity Has Declined), serious fantasy (Guin Saga), horror (Another), action comedy (Beelzebub), absurd comedy (Polar Bear Cafe), old school GAR (Galaxy Express 999), new school GAR (Unlimited Hyobu Kyosuke), and even a few shows with adult protagonists (Natsuyuki Rendezvous).

As a kid I loved cartoons and comic books. I even wanted to be a animator for a while. I watched Sailor Moon, Ben and Sabestian, and other anime before I even knew they were anime. I'm just a big fan of animation. At some point the United States produced the best animation out there..if you go back to the first half of the 20th century. But after that the Japanese have dominated. I will always love anime.

You shouldn't feel that way at all! That's like saying people over 20 can't drink tea, it's ridiculous. You like what you like.

Dragonball Z was my first anime. Maybe Spirited Away was before. Spirited Away is more of my style. More Japanese like. Compared to Bleach and Dragonball that is not exactly typical Japanese Anime. Yosuga No Sora and Myself Yourself is one of the few I see as more Japanese like. Like Japanese drawing style.

Anyone who says you are too old to watch anime are just self hating people who HAVE to do what society has told them what the "norm" is

What do you mean by old is my question? You mentioned you grew up on DBZ, Sailor Moon and Gundam Wing, which are the same shows I grew up with along with Speed Racer reruns and I'm only 22.

Unless your hobby is like playing in the ball pit at chuckie cheeses, I don't think there is such a thing as to old.

I'm 65. I think current anime are better than ever. Sometimes I read posts just because they are outside my age limited understanding. I've never had any problems with other fans. I've been watching a lot lately to rehabilitate my Japanese ability and my wife has become a big fan.

I'm 26, so I'm not sure if I count as "too old" yet. I don't think I'll ever feel too old to watch it, though. I started when I was in elementary school and have always liked it. Some of my friends give me crap now and then but the quality of "adult" television isn't such that I can't see the hypocrisy in looking down on my anime preference.

No, just seeing those thirty-something year old guys reading manga in Barnes and Noble or whatever just makes me want to curl up and die.
