I know, but making any of the references you mention (all of which I still get, thankfully) would result in me being called that if it doesn't just result in a blank, uncomprehending stare.

I wouldn't call today's anime / manga fandom balkanized. (Good word!) I'd call it ... full of mutual hostility. Which I suppose is about the same thing, when you think about it. *chuckles*

I always feel like you do, especially at anime conventions. I really try to make new friends at cons, but it's pretty difficult when everyone I meet is in high school or even middle school , I'm only 25 but I have a couple degrees and a full time job and it's always pretty hard to relate to younger anime fans :u

I am in my fifties I stopped watching regular TV some years ago, boring. After watching foreign films that got boring as well same old story lines. Half of the anime I have seen I would not recommend to anyone. There are some very good series with twist I never would have guessed. To me it is refreshing and I do not have to hear some TV or movie star spout out something stupid. If I want a opinion from somebody a PHD on the subject would help. This season I figure there are 8 or 9 shows I will watch. then I will probably cut it down to 4 or 5.

Yes the things that are the centre of their lives are... history for me. but I'm the one who's out of place. That and the hate threads and other similar juvenile nonsense make me feel disconnected from... a lot of fandom.

After readying these post it makes me want to join a 30+ crunchroll group. Is there one out there yet? I have been watching anime for 25 years now. Longer then most people have been alive on here.

This one: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/weeaboo

It tends to get thrown around a lot, regardless of whether or not it actually applies.

I didn't mean speaking japanese I meant.... like... you could compare say Monsanto to GENOM and people would know what you meant.
or mention B-ko's dad and get all kinds of reactions.
or say something like 'Guarded by homicidal wooden beer cans' and again people would know who you were referencing.
or just Mention 'how to kill' Magazine and have people start laughing.

Nowadays there's too many anime and the fandom is too... balkanised.... to have that common reference base.

ROFL homicidal wooden beer cans I haven't heard that in years. now that anime is becoming main stream it's loosing the tight knit community feel it once had.....sadly

There is something special in being small. This where I think libertarians are a little too focused on Big government to see the real problem...

anything BIG is bad. Once it's a sea of faceless people or run by an anonymous bureaucracy, it's over. Anyone who thinks the government is unique in this regard hasn't had to deal with the telephone company or a big cable provider.

Not that I'm saying that Fandom has gotten too big. In my mind I'd like anime to be even more popular than it is...

...It's just.. yes... there was something special in that tight knit community of the small fandom and I DO miss it.

If you're referring to anime, I'm not a sports genre aficionado. I guess when it comes to anime genres, the first one that I liked was cyber punk. GitS, Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy, etc were the ones that I was into.

Hey Girls and Boys. I am definitely here to tell you don't be worried about your age no matter what you are into. The perspective of youth is that anyone old enough to have kids is really really old. And then they blink, and that is how old they are. Blink again and you are a 48 year old (and counting) who needs to remember not to let anyone bring you down. I think they teach that in anime. Always be yourself. I have never heard of anyone announcing the age at when all of life's pleasures will no longer be suitable for them, so let's all break the false modesties and embarrassment, and live the life! Just don't forget to eat your veggies and get outside once a day. I am so glad you brought this up, so cool!

I'm almost 20 and while i certainly find anime in general less enjoyable, that's simply due to the fact I've matured out of the demographic for alot of anime (teenage boys 13-18). I consider anime to be the same as any creative medium, whether it be television show, movies, books I don't think any is above the other and as long as you enjoy it, there's no age limit.

I began watching anime with kids basics like Princess Comet, Princess Sarah, UFO Baby, Fancy Lala. Then I moved on to Journey to the West, Earth Maiden Arjuna (one of my favorites), Silent Mobius, Lunar Legend... I don't know if all of them can be considered old animes, but they don't show them on TV anymore and I miss those stories.

Agreed, I've always viewed anime as anime. So whether it was intended for kids or adults, as long as the story was interesting I'd watch it regardless of my age compared to the target demographic. I watched Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust as kid and Shugo Charo just last year. Going to the OP I didn't really post until recently because Crunchyroll tends to not work as well on my computer as it does on my phone app so I really didn't know all that there was to this site and once I did, like others have said some of the posts seemed to be about things I felt a little too old to be getting involved in (kinda like how most of the world's problems can only be handled by a ragtag group of teens/preteens in anime )
