I hit lvl30 this year and am watching more anime than ever.
It all started in the 80's, but to me everything was basically just another cartoon.
Loved Kimba, Robin Hood and later Captain Tsubasa and Sailor Moon (watching the latter was a guilty pleasure of many boys).
My "otaku life" took off when they started releasing Dragon Ball manga and NGE anime over here.
I don't give a crap about other people's opinions regarding my hobby.
I'm married, got a kid, a job and can pretty much life my life as I like.
Nobody can take that away from me, which allows me to brush off every kind of unpleasant "criticism" in a whim.
Then again, I don't need any friends or other people to converse with.
You can count them on a single hand and that's fine.
They all share my passion and are true friends (not just buddies).
That's all that counts.

Never let people tell you how to be or what to like/dislike.
Those guys just suck.
Cut them out of your life asap and enjoy your life by doing your thing.

The thing for me , as I have only really gotten into anime in the past 5 years or so (hardcore pc gamer tho) was that there is NOTHING WORTH WATCHING ON "NORMAL" TV!!! I just like a good story and I seem only to find it now in anime. So much "American TV" has turned into propaganda for one thing or the next that I can't stand it. yet time and time again I watch an anime and think "This will suck , I must be wasting my time " and yet I almost always love it!! Now I am at the point of watching any and all anime at least once , caus there is a good chance that it will be worth it.

and about being "older" , just means I get to watch my anime on a huge TV any time I want to!!

although ive been watching anime for many a years now i agree completely with nuclear... there is nothing worthwhile on tv anymore.
also so true about the anime on a giant 50 inch tv whenever you want
im a grown ass man and ill watch anime whatever time of day i feel

Well, the oldest anime fans I know of are in their late forties/early fifties, so in a sense you're not in the older crowd, more like in the middle And I certainly will still be watching anime when I'm your age and as long as possible (nobody knows how it might change in the long run but there's very little that anime could do to make my interest wane, let alone disappear.

I remember getting depressed after turning 19 because I was reading shoujo manga about 16 year old girls.

I have been watching anime since i was born i just didn't know it was anime till 2011 where i watched death note and started my anime watching for real (the anime i watched as a child was pokemon and sonic x).

I do sometimes come on crunchyroll and look at the anime and think "wow so much fan service, same old same old anime"
meaning its like every year only 4 good animes come out of it. IMO

And because anime is getting a ton more younger viewers who dont know what real anime is, and they try and jump on the latest anime bandwagon and act like its the best anime when i bet they have only watched like 2. (i have watched over 300 animes)

Hahaha, me too XD For me, it was more the Young Adult novels that did it. I remember being so sad, because I thought I was outgrowing my favorite genre! All the characters are too young now! lol

Everybody on this page before me is still a kid. Sorry, I just had to say that. But it is true- 37wallflower73 was born when I was on my second assignment (in Germany) with the USAF.

Anyway, it really doesn't matter how old you are in regards to anime/manga. The story/lessons learned transcend time and will be enjoyable no matter how old you are.

I said this in another thread, but I'll have time to be "old" when the dirt hits the pine box. I don't, but if I wanted to play with barbie dolls at my age, I would. Other people's opinions of me are a gauge for whether or not they are worth my time. I have better things to do than pander to folks who lack self awareness. I mean, look at some football fans: Grown men painting themselves and making fools of themselves over a game. Don't get me wrong, I don't disapprove of them. I just think its nuts that something like that is normal and a-ok while grownups watching cartoons is weird? Unless you are literally not physically able due to age derived infirmities, there is no such thing as too old for hobbies.

I really enjoy reading these post, the ones that get the most are the ones that start off , I'm 30 and have been watching anime most of my life. When I was 30 I had been watching anime for about 16 to 17 years but at the time the term anime was unheard of, they were known as Japanese cartoons. I will turn 65 in two months and I still watch and enjoy anime. So the way I figure is that you only out grow anime if you want to. And right now I really don't want to.
