I'm 50 and my earliest japanese animation was Gigantor the space age robot and Speed Racer. My kid got me reintroduced with Naruto. Love it.

Had to chime in on this one. Never too old for anime! I've been watching anime and reading manga for 15+ years now. I've met anime fans of all ages and have found them to all bring an interesting perspective.

The perspective of someone who was in the Vietnam War and lived through the cold war era (bay of pigs specifically comes to mind) for instance on Grave of the fireflies, barefoot Gen, and a number of miyazaki films, provided context that I will never forget.

Though it certainly gets harder to find enjoyable series as you get older, you are able to pick up on nuance that are fairly unseen by less traveled viewers. The industry does certainly skew towards a younger demographic now. I look forward to more seinen series eventually in the line up, as few as they are.

YAY! This thread makes me really happy! I don't feel like i am old.. But i guess when i go to a convention i do. XD

I count myself as starting as an anime fan in the year 1998 (97 maybe?) when i saw Iria on Scifi.. Around the same time my mom had called my twin sister into the front room to show her "this little pink haired girl who was swearing" (Tenchi in Love. LOL).. Before that we had watched things like Super Book (thanks public television!), Sailor Moon and the like, but that was the first time we realized it was 'different' i think. After watching Tenchi Muyo! In love we soaked up anything anime related, and begged our parents to take us to Media Play (yep...) to buy VHS (yep..) of ALL OF THE TENCHI THINGS. That trend didn't die out until Shin (Sh!t) Tenchi Muyo.. But i regress. We wore our shirts to school, some we had made from pictures printed from our computer and taken to those shirt places that'd burn them on the shirt for you... Found our first anime friends on the bus at school that way. Since then its been a long way. We met a good friend who then owned an anime shop we used to walk there every weekend (i believe we were 14). He was like 30 when we meet him but we thought he was the coolest ever. XD He'd let us sit in back of the counter and read manga before it was set out. LOL Friends with him till this day. Also my stint in college left me with a few long term friends. Also met my husband through anime actually.. He came to my lunch table wearing a Slayers shirt (one of my fav anime of all time.. It was a Lina and Naga shirt).. I pretty much forced him to trade it for some copies of movies on VHS. XD*** He did it though.

GAH. SORRY I RAMBLE. Anyway, i don't plan on giving up on this hobby anytime soon! We just (finally) bought a house, and our whole upstairs is dedicated to dorkdom. I call it my 'dorkitorum' XD**

Nice to meet you all!

Oh man ... I remember seeing Iria on Sci-Fi back then too ... granted, I'd already been into anime for a few years. I remember liking it so much that I went through and bought it on DVD as soon as I found it at the Suncoast that used to be in Okemos / Meridian Mall (I'm from Michigan too!). I was stoked.

I also remember watching Silent Mobius around that time too, though that series didn't impress me as much as Iria.

That being said ... I don't think that there is an age where it is not acceptable to watch anime; there are so many different types that there is bound to be a series or genre that will fit you as you age. That, or if you're like me, you love anime period, and will watch nearly any genre.

The movie that got me the most from SciFi i think was Armitage the III...

Also, i'm not sure where that is.. I'm closer to the Detroit area. But i do remember Suncoast!

I made a list of manga artist and the works they were involved in; the numbers next to their names was their age when they started drawing/writing for the series. Disclaimer - age might be a rough estimate.

I just wanted to add this information so that we can add the artist perspective. Can you imagine somebody telling these artist that they reached an age limit therefore the manga they just written/drew cannot be published...

I've been watching anime since I was elementary starting with DBZ. I am 20, but my baby-face appearance make me feel young, so I feel just fine. Nevertheless, whether you're an old anime fan or not, I think, as a community, we can all come together and relate to great content that is anime!

I'm 58 and enjoy anime, I have for years and I suspect that it will be the same till I can't watch anymore. I have gotten more selective about what I'll watch now though. I don't usually post or read the posts because most are geared toward adolescents, I saw "older anime" and it caught my eye.

I'm 44 and I have been a fan of anime most of my life. Truth be told, I fell away from it during the past ten years or so, but being a dad requires giving up some so that I can be with my kids. Now they are older and I'm indoctrinating them into he world of anime. Nothing like curling up on the couch with your kids and watching Gurren Lagann!

You're never too old for anime!

Seriously though, I don't see any problem with watching anime at any age. If you enjoy it, then watch away!

Some people think I'm too old for it. I'm kinda alone in that department anyways most of my crowd was never in par with my anime indulgence. There was a time, maybe about 2-3 people share that interest with me. So whenever I start watching anime again, I just tell myself or the people who questions me liking anime that "we all have our own interest, it's no different watching soap operas or tv dramas; anime is just my forte, my interest." But, lately, I'm sort of that person that who have this certain phase in time that loves anime, then games, then movies, then anime again... that's just how it is in my anime life lol...

Hm,, I was kinda out of the topic... Anyways, sometimes, I don't post in the forum topic not because of my age, because some of the comments are nonsense and a bit immature. So I just don't comment on it.

wow a lot more people in my age group then I thought on here. But really it doesn't matter what age you are when it comes to anime i know the non- watchers would say other wise. but then again they tend to watch two men beating each other up and to me that is something a teenage boy with to much hormones flowing would watch.
