I am Half Latin American and half White (mixed European countries). I grew up over-sea's (in Europe, where people thought I looked Asian) in my younger years, but look white now. I now find it funny when I tell people my background, because they seem shocked.

Primarily African-american. I'm mixed with Caucasian, Hispanic, German, and Cherokee.

I'm Hispanic as my parents come from Cuba. My grandparents however, come from Spain and France. One of them is also part Indian.
So I guess my ethnicities are - Spaniard, French, Indian. 8D

Well unless you have extremely pale skin (for example if you're an albino) or particularly European facial features I think it's some sort of insult.
Obviously if they're not referring to your physical characteristics they must be talking about your behaviour which would mean that they are stereotyping both the white and black "race" (whatever those are). White people do this, black people do that. The truth is that people's behaviour has more to do with their social class than their skin tone or bone structure.

That kind of comment really can't please anyone and if you don't know how to feel about it, then it's certainly not good. I don't see what's to be happy about with this comment. If you're black and you're not a criminal, you're not ignorant and you for example enjoy literature and the arts, that doesn't make you white, it makes you a black person that likes that sort of thing.

Can I ask if you've ever questioned these people on what their meaning is? Honestly it sounds like something an imbecile would say. I bet the type of people who say that to you, are the ones who would go to a predominantly non white country and spend most of their time on a beach never bothering to visit any cultural areas so that they never have to be disillusioned about non white people's interests in things other than petty crime, weave, sex, golden teeth and drugs.
