The NHK novel, in my opinion, is the best novel I have ever read. Perhaps it is because I'm already familiar with the characters from the NHK franchise, but once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down (and that barely happens with me and novels XD)! NHK is my number one series, tied with Puella Magi Madoka Magica. All that aside, the story is portrayed wondrously, and the overall theme of the story (don't worry, I won't list any spoilers) is absolutely phenomenal. The novel is very well-written, nicely-paced, and it couldn't have been written more effectively.
I would personally recommend the anime first, then the novel, and last but not least, the manga (preferably in that order), you don't have to go in that order, that's just what I recommend! :)

Even though I enjoyed the Novel, I didn't find myself like the novel's interpretation of the characters as much as I enjoyed their anime counterparts. For example, I sort of hated the relationship between Sato and Yamazaki.

It's most likely personal tastes that keep me from really liking it or maybe it's the order I did the events (I read the Novel after a 3rd viewing of the anime). I would still tell fans to read it, but as someone's first introduction to the series, I would just tell them to watch the anime.
