Goodness, you'd think Maria and Saki were intended to be the main pair at this rate. Seriously, that ending scene didn't even need to happen. It's starting to feel like fanservice, and it really makes things confusing. I don't really like the intense focus on Maria, especially when they make her seem so out of character. Ah well;; I'm also absurdly confused about Maria and Mamoru's child. That kid can't possibly be old enough to be a cantus user yet, considering the time it would take to conceive a child and all. Maybe I'm thinking too hard about this, though. This episode was fine overall, it just felt really lacking. Also, to reiterate, Vertical Inc. has offered to translate the novels with enough support. Aside from liking the Tumblr post linked by drdr49, it'd really mean a lot if you could buy some other novels and mangas published and translated by Vertical Inc., namely The Crimson Labyrinth, Shin Sekai Yori's author's other novel. Also, share the info 'round and tell Vertical Inc. you'd buy it if they translated it. Thank you, hopefully we'll see a From The New World translation published in the near future. :3 In response to your spoiler: Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide It seems that the cantus comes in at around the same time as puberty, or atleast, is linked in some ways. If it really has been 12 years as said in the end of the episode its not impossible. It would also explain why they only suddenly just had the ability to use it. If mamoru and maria had sex soon after they elft the village (like saki and satoru) then give it 9 months and leaves the kid around 11 which I think is reasonable. It also explains why the user is monstrously powerful, remember how strong saki was shown to be before it was initially sealed? That said, that relies on mamoru not wussing out of something like having sex with someone. I dobt shinji ikari mk 2 could do that... What did you think the weird blue light/woman out of the dead guy was? Do they have a twitter? Ill do some twitter botherings if they do Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Eh, I guess that makes sense, but it still seems kind of unlikely they could give birth so young, or conceive so fast even. But if they did immediately after leaving having sex and managed to conceive, I guess it works. Not really sure myself, but it reminds me of episode four; the black female figure with a scythe from Rijin's attack on the queerats. I'm assuming it's something of a form or spirit of cantus, leaving the user upon their death. Yupp! @Vertical_Ed |

For those who think the Maria bit at the end was fan service, consider:
Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide that was a pretty succinct way to say they had a kid. Unless one thinks its less fan service to show them having sex and popping out a baby. Now it should be clear who "he" is and his origin. Otherwise it's just some guy showing up massacring people and making people read into it. Though I knew this was coming also, Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide I'm still bummed that Maria and Mamoru got murdered. I wish they really had gone away and not lied and stayed nearby just to get betrayed. |

Click to show or hide it makes sense on the face of things but like I say, I can imagine mamoru is scared of his own body, let alone someone else's, god forbid a girls. I don't know though, wouldn't the kid realise something was wrong growing up with rats with no parents, then suddenly voice drops, wet dreams and epic powers? I dunno, either I expect this kid will be the major enemy Twitter bothered, also older saki is rather attractive but so is her mum. I love one skips away from being kids |

Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Interested to see what happens next and who this "he" that is coming might be. Still doubt whether Maria and Mamoru are dead based off of what the dream Saki had when Shun told her she should have killed Maria. |

Pretty good episode this week, though the story still feels really oddly paced. I don't think that's going to change by the end, but at the very least it still has it's amazing atmosphere to keep me invested.
Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Also, was that Maria's voice in the preview? That's interesting, though not sure if it'll end up being good or bad. |

Another awesome episode. Best SF anime ever! Horror too. Will benefit from less compression in Bluray in the dark scenes so I am glad I'm importing this one.
I have the novels so it has been so, So, SO hard not to spoil you guys all season. Will be nice in six weeks to discuss it properly. |

I haven't seen the blu-rays yet, but I've been told they fixed up episode 5's animation. Sure hope they do that with some other episodes as well. Also, I do hope it looks nicer with less compression, as the darker scenes are pretty hard to see haha. :d I read bits of the novel, but I didn't want to spoil myself from the anime. Interested to see discussions comparing the novel and anime, I love seeing little changes adaptions make and how better or worse they are because of that. |

The third disc came with episodes 5-7 and lots of bonus video as well. Disc 4 end of the month with episodes 8-10. |
