Are streams HD on the new Kindle Fire HD

dhains 18011 cr points Send Message: 56 Offline	Permalink Reply Quote Posted 9/26/12, edited 9/26/12 Hi, I'm deciding what kind of tablet I want to get and I'm wondering if the crunchyroll streams to the new Fire HD are actually in HD? It might seem like a silly question since its called Kindle Fire HD and supports 720p playback, but I remember reading before that on the app for the older kindle fire that the streams were upscaled 480p and looked kind of crappy. Of course that device did not support 720p playback anyway, so they had to either do that or downscale 720p, but I wanted to make sure that the app for Kindle Fire HD is updated/compatible/whatever for the new device and that I'll be able to get 720p streams. Just want to make sure because I only have experience with the iOS app and watching crunchyroll will be one of the tablet's primary functions

We are working on bringing this functionality to our other supported devices.

Anyone out there using a kindle fire hd to watch crunchyroll that can comment on the picture quality? If it looks decent enough now, knowing that HD eventually will be coming might be enough. Or maybe I will just hold off for the Ipad mini, the small form factor but larger than my phone is really what I'm after.

Picture quality is fine, but the version of the app is much older (a year or so?) and buggier than the one in the google play store. For example, it only shows 9 entries from your queue, and browsing is all messed up. But if you only have a 9-entry queue, it's fine :-)

Does anyone know if it is possible to install the newer crunchyroll app from the Google play store on the Kindle Fire HD? It's not a huge issue, but it seems like it should be possible to do this since it runs Android.

You have to have some way to download the APK file, as the Kindle Fire HD cannot be used with the Google Play Store (without significant hacking, etc.). I'm hoping that eventually either the CR staff will start updating the Amazon version or that they'll just make a direct link to the APK file available. That's what the folks at Viz Media and Economist did for me (their apps are also missing / old in the Amazon Appstore).

This is a concern for me, since I am considering getting a Nook Tablet, and the SD card image for rooting it that I have found sets it up with the Amazon and GetJar appstores, where the Amazon version is old and the GetJar version is very, very old (pre-queue). It seems like updating the secondary Android stores to a recent mature, stable apk every six months would be a good habit for Crunchyroll to get into. They also ought to submit the Crunchyroll app into the Nook app store, especially since it looks like the new Nook HD and HD+ might not come with native flash video.
