That made me laugh very hard. I can see many possible reasons, but for curiosity's sake, pray tell why?

Im not usually a very emotional person, but after getting to a certain point in Clannad (around the point where Ushio is born) it got to the stage where I was crying uncontrollably. Like really crying. And then when Ushio collapsed in the snow, i completely lost it...

I had watched a ton of anime, but nothing with the emotional impact that Clannad had on me. Since then I've been more emotionally vulnerable to the anime that I've watched (Kanon, Elfen Lied, Angel Beats, etc...).

Even now, years later, the series has the ability to affect me.

Just the other day I was working out at the gym and the second season opening song came up on my iPods random playlist and I got so choked up I had to get off the treadmill and get a drink before I could continue my workout.

Now go watch Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Higurashi: When They Cry).
Same format, but with the sadness swapped out for scariness. Just as effective.

I've been a fan of Key anime since Air. every one up until Clannad got me choked up at certain parts, but Clannad just made me lose it. I really enjoyed Angel Beats! and and enjoying Little Busters! as well. was a little skeptical of Little Busters! at first, but it quickly started to get that Key feeling to it. hoping it'll live up to the standard Clannad set for it.

I watched After Story the season it came out. So I had to wait a week between each episode. I was an absolute mess for about 10 weeks. I still can't listen to the music without choking up.

I really hate Clannad. It dragged on and on, the moe and cuteness was too forced, the characters dull, and the storyline very boring.

I really like Clannad After Story. It was slow at first, then it got very touching, sweet, tragic; showed the bonds of family and love after death and showed the growth of the characters.

Pros -

- Gorgeous art/animation
- Beautiful music
- Touching story
- Very good second season.

Cons -

-Forced moe/cutness
- Characters seem to be based on being "cute" and "innocent" rather than having actual personalities like characters in an older anime.
- Drags A LOT in places.
- First season is pretty crappy.

This, except that I finished the whole show and I still hate Fuko.

Clannad has a funny sorta place in my heart... I finally got around to watching it about a year ago, and it amongst a small few others got me back into anime in a huge way. I'm quite a stone-hearted person, so a great deal of this series emotional impact was kinda lost on me; that said the latter half of After Story was depressing as hell.

I was impressed though, following Clannad I watched both Air and Kanon, but my opinion was a little torn thereafter. Clannad is probably one of the best emotional dramas I've ever watched, properly heart-wrenching stuff. Air made me morbidly misanthropic for a while but it was also borderline garbled nonsense which was a bit of a mood killer. Kanon... Eh... I just found it very difficult to like any of the characters, who felt really boring and stereotyped; maybe just never clicked with me.

In the now however, for my friends and family who ask about Clannad, Air and Kanon. I'm left saying to them that Clannad was good, Kanon was dull and Air was borderline gibberish at times; but if you watch one, watch Clannad. I conveniently leave out the fact that each seems to revolve around an emotionally subdued male protagonist and and emotionally quirky cripple girl, which is other than the heaps of depressing the only common factor between the three series.

Still, Clannad is definitely recommended watching.

I guess if I was to rate Clannad, Air and Kanon it would be like this for me:

4) Clannad ...Actually I don't like Clannad whatsoever lol. I actually hate it more than I dislike Angel Beats (and even the ongoing Little Busters).

3) Kanon I like this series, but don't love it. Again, the Fox-girl's arc (like Fuko's) drags on and on. The story plot was very obvious and somewhat dull and bland after a while. It took too long to finish. Still, I liked it (especially the demon-hunter girl). Gosh, I forgot all their names lol.

2) Clannad After Story It starts off slow again, but then it just wraps you up and becomes so interesting, touching and tragic you can't stop watching it. SO much better than Clannad in every way.

1) Air (I guess what I love about Air is that it was short enough so it didn't drag and the moe doesn't get to annoy me, it's the only REAL tragic series of the group, and I loved the vague, dreamy atmosphere and the not-so easily understandable, entwining plot.

Well I can see where you're coming from on that one, save that I would lump Clannad and After Story as the same series. I know that kinda detracts from After Story, but to this day I'd still argue you could drop two thirds of the entire Clannad series and still have more than enough episodes to make a properly good anime.

My main problem with Kanon was I found it painfully difficult to take guy's (forgot his name) deep and meaningful relationships with what 5? girls. That and I found his character to be very boring.

But I guess we break even on Air because even though I find it barely comprehensible with some serious mood breaking moments, it was certainly the most tragic and depressing of the lot.

Haven't watched Little Busters, don't know if I will.

Oh and I also hate Angel Beats... heh

I absolutely loved Clannad I probably have never cried as much from watching something as I have done from watching Clannad and Clannad After Story.

What is the point of the name? I looked it up and can never find what Clannad means or remember anything in the show related to it. Anyone know or is it one of the mysteries of Anime?

Edit: Little Busters is very boring. I'll wait until it finishes to watch it. Not a good show to watch weekly. Honestly I dont think Clannad would be either (I watched it all in a few days but it feels like the kind of show that is even more boring if watched weekly).
