It's an interesting perspective, even if I don't agree with it. And I respect the fact that he admits his bias, which is a big improvement over others that state their definitive top-whatever lists. When it comes down to it, we are all biased. :)

I think it a shame that nothing from Satoshi Kon made his list, nor any recent anime. I think there are a lot of intelligent, adult anime produced over the past 10 years. But then again, that's my opinion.

Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress both came up after the video was made, Those would be definite honorable mentions along with Appleseed. For myself personally, I didn't get to see Perfect Blue until I started seeking out anime actively in video stores and on the various channels that would sometimes air movies.

As far as my bias, yes, I am very much biased due to my own experience. I play it up a little bit for the video, was kind of going for "angry old man ranting" kind of deal, but honestly, had trouble picking out examples of "bad anime" for the intro section. :p

I neglected to say this up front: I enjoyed the video. More importantly: it is a good conversation starter.

Anyway, since the video was posted today, there was no way for me to tell when the video was actually made. I assumed it was recently. Of course, given how much anime is out there, there is no way for anyone to see it all. We are all reduced to making lists based on what we've seen. It's a given that good shows will be missed.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it, and of course my own list is limited to what I've seen myself, but I'm interested in hearing how someone else's list would differ. And to clarify I saw Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress many years ago, but forgot about them until they were mentioned after the video was made, over the last 2 or 3 days. (theres also a typo in there on my behalf pointed out afterwards)

I tend to stick to anime that interests me, which isn't much. Firstly, I prefer dubs (you can sling and arrow me now) and the subject matter has to have some level of appeal. I'm open to suggestions, but I feel like most anime today just lacks the edge that used to be there when it became more mainstream.

Nicely done video but unfortunately I can't agree since I didn't get into anime till 2004. I also have to admit I prefer well done dubs better as well but don't mind subtitles. Maybe Anime hasn't lost its edge, just your tastes changed? I know I don't like all the same things I did 10-20 years ago. Maybe try some different anime genres that you wouldn't have before. Well still was amused with your video, it was well put together.

Thanks for the feedback Eria, hopefully you'll get to check out some of the anime on the list. (macross plus is available free as per the annotation I left) I've watched anime of all genres, I guess as evidenced by the list I gravitate toward sci-fi and horror.

With me, I'm just hopelessly nostalgic I prefer the darker more gritty style of the 80's and 90's. Ghost in the Shell is basically "law and order: cybernetic crimes unit" as far as the plot and dialogue, which is funny because I never appreciated law and order before that. :p

Thanks very much for checking it out, if you are interested in seeing more from me remember to subscribe.

You see people making YouTube videos posting on forums saying what is good, giving these "opinions"... while nice, does not mean a whole lot.

Different animes cater to different audiences, it is not limited to what one person thinks is good or what should be watched before you can really judge anime. Any intelligent person is able and capable of making a good rational of what is good and what is not. I should state that everything is relative, in order to compare something you need something else to compare. If we limited ourselves comparing animes of which the video stated, well you'd get a whole lot of shit anime.

I however do not agree that "those" animes he listed are the top 5. It is to my knowledge that once you start something for the very first time you tend to compare your future works in this case watching anime back to when you started. The felling of nostalgia tends to get in our way/view of what is truly there, enjoy what you watch.

Anime is anime, good or bad it is still anime, watch it, enjoy it, form an opinion which is fine just do not form a misinterpreted one.

"It is, what it is."

I don't think its fair to group all anime into one category, much like films each is unique and not all of it is relative to everyone. Of course I'll be the first to admit my bias, but I feel 4 out of the 5 mentioned films don't really get the exposure they should.

You could argue all day why you like or don't like an anime, it just comes down to taste. I am open to hearing how someone else's list would differ.
