I wouldn't want to slurp, just because it spreads tiny droplets of oily broth everywhere.

No. Considering the fact that you are asking us this, you are most certainly not Japanese - the Japanese will only think you are a baka gajiin who doesn't know better.

^ No...

My parents went to Japan this summer and my mom got all embarrassed when my dad slurped really loudly while eating his ramen. But when she turned around, no one cared. Really.

Yes, of course! They took it in the middle of their meal and sent it to me. I was studying for my final exams then in Canada, seriously felt like crying when I saw the photo, lol.

Lucky parents X_X

And no, it wouldn't matter, people slurp if they are rushed/in a hurry all the time. Don't TRY to slurp, if it seems like you're trying hard to make a slurping noise, just...weird....
But if you happen to slurp, nobody will give a bloop

Yea my sis and her husband used to teach English in Japan and when I went to visit (back in 2006), the first meal that I had was Ramen. We were in public and when I saw them slurping the noodles, I was like "WTF?" They laughed and said it's normal.

Those over 40 consider it crude but wont say anything due to you being a bakka gajiin.

In a nice resturant they may tell you its bad manners to be herd 2 tables over. Yhay happened to me.

Yeah, well, congrats. They're gonna think that anyway. As much as I enjoy and admire Japanese culture, I recognize that they are a very insular people who prefer to remain so. And an outsider--no matter how well-liked or well-received--will always remain an outsider. You might not be baka, but you are forever gaijin.
