Yea my sis and her husband used to teach English in Japan and when I went to visit (back in 2006), the first meal that I had was Ramen. We were in public and when I saw them slurping the noodles, I was like "WTF?" They laughed and said it's normal.



From what I understand its so that you can finish the noodles before they soak up too much of the juices and become too soft to enjoy which would be a sign that you did not enjoy the food, but then again, I'n not Japanese so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not just in Japan for many Koreans and Chinese people I know also slurp their noodles. I myself am Korean and I usually do out of habit. As for the broth being flung everywhere, you learn how to "properly" slurp noodles so that it doesn't make a mess.
