I can't find any place offering Friday evening only classes in the NYC area. I teach Monday to Thursday evenings.

I can't even find any place offering Winter session (January-only) intensive Japanese 1.

I certainly can't claim to speak or know Japanese well, but I've been learning by self-study (Japanese for Everyone as a main text, supplemented by dictionaries and some other grammar manuals, the latter mostly published by Kodansha), with a weekly conversation partner who's a student at the local university. My reading and writing are relatively decent for the effort spent thus far (can manage through more simply written manga like Azumanga Daioh and Shirokuma Cafe), but my speaking and listening comprehension are relatively poor. For me, while I'm grateful for the opportunity, a once-a-week conversation session isn't enough to really rigorously advance my speaking and listening-- I'd need a structured official class too, but with work and family, there's no way I'd have the time these days for that.

I'll add that watching anime on CR helps too, but frankly, that's about 98% entertainment and maybe at most 2% educational!
