I've just sent in a contact us form about the missing scene.
I truly want to know why it has been cut out.

Maybe Crunchyroll has nothing to do with it, maybe they do.
It would be nice if there was at least a notice why, not a whole essay but just "The song has been cut out because of certain reasons. Sorry for the inconvenience.".
True, it would be the same (Comments and the missing scene), but at least they would've notified us about it.

I don't know why people rate this anime so low, it is better than half the stuff out there maybe not this season but seriously this is a fun anime to watch.

There's no random panty shot, so this doesn't offend the "why do tentacle exist" or "all harems suck"

There's an actual story that is easy to grasp.

There's a plot that is pretty fictional but still the plot is there.

Characters doesn't make you /rage

no annoying male protagonist

So can some genius(hater) tell why the rating is so low?

The first episode was weak admittedly, which didn't really help people make good judgments on how the show would be like. Even though the show started its first 5 minutes with a tank battle as a teaser, the rest of the episode had people thinking that this was a "cute girls doing cute things" anime.

Given how we've already had 8 episodes to prove that it such isn't the case, then yeah I'm wondering why it's still rated to low here. At the very least the show is doing quite well in Japan: Girls Und Panzer BD/DVD volume 1 is currently the #1 preordered title for this season's anime, surpassing heavyweights like Chuunibyou and Jojo.

Not just disc 1, all six are in the top twelve rankings.

I have preordered the BDs for the whole season! I watched it streamed at 1080p yesterday HDMI from laptop right after watching Shinsekai Yori BD 1, both on widescreen plasma and the difference between streamed 1080p and Blu-ray is very obvious. It is like comparing CrunchyRolls' streams to bad fansubs, you think Crunchy looks great until you see it on BD. The compression does bad things. Dusk Maiden, Tari Tari, Mysterious... all of them look and sound so much better on BD, bright colors, sharp, can see the pencil lines from hand drawn characters, music is Dolby Digital.

As for this series it is just a fun intersection of a lot of things. Tanks, fighting, characters, an interesting setting. Very rewatchable.

WTH happened to the Katyusha scene? I was looking forward to that? I really sincerely hope there is a good explanation for it, because frankly I'm quite upset. You don't have to translate the damn song, its a RUSSIAN FOLK SONG. How idiotic is that? I'm really upset. You bet this is going all over my SNS feeds. What a complete and utter garbage.

Maybe it's an anti-Soviet/Communist thing. They ARE the next thing to Satanists to the Americans. also I don't think it's old Russian folk song since the Katyusha Bombardment rocket truck was a WWII weapon. More likely it was something sung (under orders no doubt) during a parade through red square.

No no, I know this song, it is a folk song. I don't think I buy that the rockets were named after this song, but its been around for at least 60-70 years. I have it on a tape from the 70s.

No clue my friend. They had me with the WWII Movie music and the Pink Lee. As mentioned by others the first episode was weak and the theme could have easily been mistaken for 'Moe-blob' with tanks. or presumed to be Ecchi thanks to the pantsless strike witches.

though... Myself I would have compared it more to Sora no wotto. (available here. or at least it was)

I really dislike this show.

There's something about this series that shows Japan's perpetual worship of WW2 Nazi Germany.

And world war two happened (Depending on who you talk to) as early as the 1930's...

83 years ago if we go with 1939.

Joseph Stalin was a big fan of parades back in the 30's, 40's and 50's (right up until he died.)

hmmm and judging from this celebration of the anniversary of the end of WWII... Katyusha remains a popular patriotic song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sy1K9U4MJkg

Given the WWII theme of all the other 'schools' and 'Pravda''s use of T-34's T-34 Obr 85's, KV's and I think even An IS (Joseph Stalin) heavy tank.

I've little doubt that Katyusha is from that era. And it wouldn't surprise me if some Closet McCarthy-ite in the US cut it out for that reason.

AHA...

from the blurb under one of the Videos my search of Katyusha it's a quote from an anonymous You Tube user so... it may be inaccurate.

Katyusha, Katusha or Katjusha (Russian: Катюша) is a Russian Soviet wartime song about a girl longing for her beloved, who is away on military service. The music was composed in 1938 by Matvei Blanter and the lyrics were written by Mikhail Isakovsky. It was first performed by the celebrated Russian folk singer, Lidiya Ruslanova. It is part of the repertoire of the Alexandrov Ensemble.

PPS after further digging...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyusha

from the page linked above.

Katusha or Katyusha, is the English transliteration of the Russian word Катюша, the diminutive form of the name Екатерина ("Yekaterina"), the Russian form of Catherine. It may refer to:

Katyusha (song), a Russian wartime song about a girl longing for her beloved
Katyusha rocket launcher, Soviet rocket launcher of World War II, named after the song
Tupolev SB, Soviet medium bomber of World War II
Team Katusha, a Russian professional cycling team
Katusha Demidova, a Russian ballroom dancer

I have to disagree. Please elaborate. No one has started saying 'Blood and Honor' I've seen no Swastikas. Yes there are german tanks (and also british, american, soviet, and Italian (such as they were) tanks) but none of them even have the iron cross on them.

If anything the 'Pravda' Episode makes you wonder if the creators wished to glamorize Stalin's Russia, which was just as brutal and compassed a larger death toll of it's own citizens (By an order of magnitude)

Or maybe the Playing of "The British Grendiers" during the first battle against the tea-drinking school is meant to glorify the British (who had their own share of sins during that war)

Is it because of the uniforms. Or the fact that one of the 'Heroines' Cosplays as Erwin Rommel (A guy implicated in the plot to kill Hitler, allowed to suicide rather than be hung by piano wire like the rest of those accused of the July '44 assassination attempt)

What then, about the Student Council VP channeling an AMERICAN general at Bastonge when she replies "NUTS" to a call to surrender?

Or the reference to a fictional American tanker (played by a Canadian) from a Clint Eastwood movie, made by the Tank Otaku member of the Heroines?

No there are plenty of WWII references here. but I see no closet Nazi worship. And trust me... I have challenged a few of Those (Caught them wearing nazi paraphenalia AND a POPPY before remembrance day. Talk about 'bad form' ... it was disgusting)

Was the missing Katyusha song in the streamed video, or was it in a video not aired on Tokyo TV?
I was watchng the streamed version but it was playing choppy, so I had to refresh to play the subbed version in a lower resolution.

I seriously question, and doubt whether it would have been censored by anyone in America for political reasons. Seems like an awfully trivial thing, unless the "SOMEONE-SOMEONES", have WAYYyy too much time on their hands with absolutely nothing better to do...
BTW- the old WW-2 Propaganda film series from Frank Cappra, "WHY WE FIGHT", has WW-2 starting on Sept-18 1931 with the Manchurian Incident... Also Russia is one of the toughtest and staunchest of the Allies!
Oh how the times and views change through the years and with politics...

Hmm...Now I want to see the uncut version of Ep.-8!

It was on an annoying fansub that puts about half the text of the story into broken german. and uses hard to read fonts. I know I'm paying to watch it here but I had Tuesday off and was busy Wednesday.

It doesn't seem to be present in the CR version. which is more irritating than the faux german and funky fonts. The fact that I wouldn't have even known had I not been watching what was probably an Illegal copy irritates me further. This is one reason piracy flourishes.

Most Americans seem to think WWII started out of the blue with Pearl Harbour in 1941 and tend to forget when they are bragging about winning the war for the free world that for 2 years they watched Europe bleed and profited from it. Every country has their own year in which they declared war. (many start with the invasion of Poland in 1939, but it was few months earlier for the Czechs) Finland doesn't even refer to that time as a singular war. For them it was the 'Winter War' (against the Soviets) the 'Continuation War' (also against the Soviets) and finally A third war whose name I forget in which they prevented Allied Invasion by going to war against German Elements in their own country (until then Germany had been the only country helping them against the invading Russians.)

I'm sure if you were Chinese or Korean WWII started much sooner. No one else really cared what the Japanese were doing until their own empires were encroached upon.

I got a rather lame reply that "The video provided to us by the publisher was for international distribution."

Yeah no shit, that doesn't explain why it was cut out from what you received and what you're doing about it, CR.

Do CR and their Japanese partners want to be a viable alternative to fansubs or not? The fansubbers for this are terrible and I'd never go near them, but missing important footage is terrible too.

Of course a mod is never going to reply here so I'll try the support forum for a better answer, I guess.

I also recommend everyone else contact them as well - if enough people complain maybe they'll present a better case to the publisher (assuming they have even tried at all so far).

Well, CR has little control or leverage over this. It's really up to the publisher what they want to provide.

The song is up on YouTube. Search for "Katyusha - Girls und Panzer EP 8" and you'll find it. This would have appeared just after the mid-episode break.

A member in Animesuki forums found out that Katyusha can't be used in the USA due to copyright reason.
