I do believe in God, but I can't refute the people who argue that it could have been something scientific since our knowledge of the brain is limited. It could be either or both.

Why are a bunch of my threads being necro'd? Also this thread was posted to stir a hypothetical discussion, in case the OP seemed to orient towards a specific viewpoint.

Science explains how things happen; religion gives meaning to what has happened. Two totally different things, and they really don't overlap much.
For example, had Dr Near-Death-Experience been in an fMRI at the time, that technology and our current understanding of the brain could explain which of this neurological pathways had been firing, and in which pattern. Using that information we may be able to infer that his visual cortex or language centers were active, or that the frontal cortex (associated with math, personality, ethics, and decision-making) was active. But if he wakes up and says that God made him do it, then the way "science" can respond is to say, "Okay, great for you. This is how God told you that stuff."
Keep in mind that there is no difference between a guy waking up from a nap saying he spoke to God and a guy waking up from a coma saying he spoke to God. Either way, they were both just dreaming.

He should know better. He experienced hallucinations caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. Claiming it was something else sells a book. Nothing to see here, move along.

If it comforts you and makes you a better person to believe in heaven I'm not going to try and convince you it doesn't exist.

I am happy that some people believe. Personally I don't know. I don't believe we have a caring loving god like religion shows. Our world is too much of a cruel place for that to be the case. I am not saying their isn't a god. I believe if you go before the "big bang" If that is also true that you'd find some sort of being. As for an after life? I don't know. I think you'd have to study the part of the brain that is our consciousness. Can science prove spirits or ghost are real?
I mean there are so many cases of ghost. If we can prove that true ghost/spirits then I believe that is where we will find the answer of the after life and all that.

Well, I have to admit that the possibility of something similar to heaven sounds more interesting and pleasant than a plain THE END or GAME OVER. I'm skeptical, but I like optimism.

I'd prefer it if you didn't judge me based on this thread. That sounds better to me.

That's a little relieving. I'm not religious, but I don't want it to just be nothing when you die. It's like, yo, I lived life to the fullest for nothing. What the hell. That'd be a total rip off.
