Example of what, precisely? Catalog title sublicenses that extended beyond North America?

The biggest problem with getting a separate contract for additional countries is that a Minimum Guarantee in line with the views that a catalog title is going to get will normally not be enough to cover the contracting cost to the Japanese licensor of the separate contract.

Wagnaria (Working) is a 2010 anime, licensed by NIS America, Hayate no Gotoku is a 2007 anime, licensed by Bandai Entertainment.

Notice that both of these had their first series licensed by US/Canada distributors already willing to work with Crunchyroll. So Crunchyroll probably had an indication from the North American distributor that it would be OK with them, before they started negotiating with the Japanese licensor.

If the outside of US rights for the first series was packaged as part of the simulcast contract for the second series, that would indeed sidestep the problem of contracting costs ~ if its all just one contract, then the simulcast Minimum Guarantee covers the contracting cost to the Japanese licensor, and the MG for the first series isn't swamped by the contracting cost.

Plus a catalog title that is the prequel to a simulcast is probably going to get fairly good viewership as catalog titles go.

That contract cost problem is why I guessed that if some outside of North America rights show up for catalog titles, it seemed likely to be part of some kind of package deal. The package deal would help spread the contracting cost over more series, so when the Minimum Guarantee for each series is added together, the deal does not cost more to the Japanese licensor than Crunchyroll offers to pay.

Nice show, not as good as season 1 and 2 as far as individual stories go, but the overarcing story was very well played. Episode 13 is a highlight for me!

Although I'm not particularly interested in this show, it's sad to see the catalogue titles rarely if ever get shown outside of the US and Canada. Considering our only source for streaming anime in the UK is terrible and also doesn't carry many of these shows anyway, it just pushes a lot of people back towards illegal downloading and streaming.

I hope at some point a deal can be reached whereby everyone get's a look in... but this is pretty unlikely to happen.

Still, CR has stepped up it's game over the last season or two and gained more shows for a world wide audience so I can't complain too much.

Yeah, isn't just how that goes?

I'm planning to do the same thing too.

The only way you can watch contiguous seasons of something that's licensed by different companies is on Hulu it seems. Well, at least legally, that is.

A catalog title is a series that aired sometime ago, and somebody(usually a North American licensee like Sentai. But NIS America, Aniplex of America, Media Blasters and the now-defunct Bandai Entertainment have all provided them in the past as well) allows Crunchyroll to stream something that they couldn't get as a simulcast. Catalog titles expand Crunchyroll's library, and help some of us who want a legal venue to see anime but don't want to go out and blind buy the DVDs for instance. Catalog titles also tend to come in groups.

Of course, catalog titles tend to get far less attention than simulcasts. But I am always thankful when Crunchyroll is able to expand its library.

And they only stream it to subscribers at the moment. Some people may not be subscribers, and may either have used up their free trial or be reluctant to use it now.

It would be nice if it came back for free viewing at Funimation.com and Hulu, but maybe people have to go onto the Funimation.com forums to ask for that.

It might happen for some series, if a package deal can be worked out for a collection of series with the same original licensor, that Crunchyroll already has the North American rights for ...

... but Crunchyroll isn't even at the point yet where it can negotiate two separate contracts for a simulcast series that has different licensors for different parts of the world, and simulcasts generally get the strongest viewership.

So it may take several more years of growth before Crunchyroll could make the finances work to double-contract individual catalog series.

Still, CR has stepped up it's game over the last season or two and gained more shows for a world wide audience so I can't complain too much.

Some of that is the Japanese creators getting more used to international simulcast streaming, but a lot of that is likely to be the growth in subscribers over the past two years. If the number of subscribers continue to grow, then its likely that barriers will continue to fall.

It is most likely we are not going to get a season 4 of Hell Girl, in fact of what could be added, my best bet of something that could get a sequel is Kimi ni Todoke, which may retroactively if there is a 3rd season get regions added, but by my knowledge Production I.G. has never simulcast something on Crunchyroll.

Kuroko's Basket was by Production I.G, right? I think that was a simulcast.
