There was just a earthquake here not to long ago about 1 hr ago not a very big one but it did shake my house. Anyway I was wondering how many earthquake has there been this year and the past few years so I look it up and got a list of earthquakes over the past years.

This link has earthquakes from 1901-2000

This link has earthquakes from 2001-2012

The one that just happen tonight is not on there yet it most likely be updated tomorrow.

So have any of you been in a earthquake or know anyone that has? How big was the earthquake and what did you do?

Up in the New England region by any chance? We just had one near my house as well, and my friend an hour north of me felt it too.

A fascinating statistic my father once pointed out (he loves following earthquakes): There've been more magnitude 7+ earthquakes in the past decade than in the previous century.

Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989. It was a 4.2 by the time it reached me in the valley. That was by far the strongest. Then there were the series of quakes that hit the Sierra Nevada region about 5 years ago. None of them were over a 4.0.

I felt it. I'm slightly west of Boston and I felt it wave past from my right to the left. Only felt it for about 5 seconds.

I was in the Northridge earthquake in 1994 which was a 6.7... it was literally the terrifying event I've ever been though.

Luckily my house only sustained light structural damage, but the damage cause by plates and glass flying out of cupboards and leaving broken glass in the carpets, our big aquariam falling over, and a lot of other things being thrown about was the worst.

All I remember is being woken up out of a dead sleep to deafening noise, and the ground feeling as if it was hurling me up in the air... i was so disoriented that I thought I got underneath my desk out of a natural reaction but I was actually to the side of it. After it was over I remember sitting in the doorway with my sisters in pitch blackness with the occasional light coming in the windows from power lines sparking and transformers on the power poles blowing and sparking, and constant aftershocks.

I remember reading that it was such a violent quake because of the blind thrust fault that it occurred on which caused high ground acceleration and highly directed shaking. This accounted for the "IX" (seen it was an X some places) (the March 2011 9.0 quake was rated a IX) rating on the "Mercalli intensity scale" which ranges from I to XII in roman numerals and measures the intensity of the quake and better describes the actual damage experienced better than the movement magnitude rating which only measures the energy released.

If that was a IX or a X, which are described as Violent and Intense respectively, I can't even begin to imagine what a XII "catastrophic" would feel like.

Don't bet on the earthquake making the list, unless the earthquake 7.0+ or caused a number of fatalities. I was in a 6.0 earthquake in Oregon. It isn't in those lists, but there were only 2 fatalities. It was rated VI on the Mercalli intensity scale. It was pretty interesting. Never expected to have an earthquake there. Ironically, I've lived in California for 13 years now and haven't experienced any earthquakes here.

Im In California which is basically earthquake land, there was one about 2 months ago and I felt the floor roll like as if I was on rollerblades. My girlfriend just a few steps away didn't feel it. I thought I was crazy, but then started hearing the radio reports on it. I've been through many quakes probably about 10, mostly small ones but will never forget the one around 1994 which shook my bed like mad! I thought it was some prank my brother was playing and remember the closet doors swinging forward to back, i was a kid so didn't know wtf was going on

so everytime I think i felt an earthquake, i check my fishtank or ceiling fans

I have been in a number of earthquakes and I have always lived in areas with large earthquake potential. During one of the larger aftershocks of the 2011 earthquake I lost my footing and fell on the concrete floor.
