Hello. The title pretty much says it all.
From the time I was a wee lad, and when I owned a N64, I'm pretty sure the package included controllers, and not REMOTES.
I do not push the button on my controller in order to turn on my television, however, through some consoles the controllers may serve as media controllers for functions that are built into the console, or even through some modification, you could do something but I'm tired of the vast majority of people calling controllers " remotes ".
Is anyone with me?

I hate that too -.- It is so annoying... Not as bad as all the alternative names for a remote which ive heard though O.o
Controllers are clearly for games consoles and most of them even have controller written on them somewhere so people who call them remotes are just wrong D:

Since when do people call controllers "remotes"? I have yet to see this happen. I've heard Wiimote many times, but that because the thing was intentionally designed to have a TV remote-style form factor.
Is this another thing I miss out on as an old fogey?

Well...there is the "Wiimote".
And it looks like a remote, but I know it's a controller. Hell I knew someone who called controllers "paddles".

Not really. I call the restroom a bathroom. Problem? Point is, little things like that should be the least of your concerns, TC.

Not to sound like an ass but:
re·mote con·trol
handheld control: a handheld device used to operate a television set, videocassette recorder, or other electronic device from a distance
operation from distance: the control of a device, system, or activity from a distance, usually by radio signals

In context of the Wii, I don't mind. 'Wii Remote' or 'Wii 'Mote' sounds much more suitable than 'Wii controller'. Plus the Wii Remote is actually shaped similarly to a remote control for a TV or CD player etc...
I wouldn't care if someone called an 360 or PS3 controller a remote, despite the fact it's not necessarily correct.
Side note, I call my 360 controller 'Onza', because I bought razer's 'onza' controller
