Well I'm just wondering what everyone's system for rating/scoring their anime is.

1. Do you use a 1-10 point scale, a letter ranking scale, a star rating scale, etc.?

2. How do you arrive at those scores? (Is it based around plot, characters, music, animation quality, etc. stuff like that? And which of these are most important to the final score of the anime?)

3. Do you give out perfect scores or complete failure scores or both?

- My scale is a 5 star rating scale, 0 being the worst possible and 5 being the best.

- I do give out perfect scores but I have yet to give out a 0 star score, probably 1/2 stars being the lowest.

- I tend to consider animation and characters as the most important (being a visually focused person) when considering final scores but I do see plot sometimes equally as important depending on the anime and I may switch it with animation as most important.

try to answer all the questions, it'll be interesting to see what everyone's view is

I tend to do everything by percentage so I guess you could say a 100 point scale. Where nothing ever gets 100. I average it out based on how much the anime focuses on particular aspects. Example: A mainly story anime such as Time of Eve would require more judgment based on plot as opposed to animation. And an action driven anime such as BTOOOM! would be judged more based on animation than plot.

I judge it based on
plot- Is it well written? Does it make sense? How believable is the dialogue? This is a great majority of my rating
character- do I care about what happens to them? They need to develop. Are they even important? They should not all be invincible unless they are supposed to be. Ex: god, deity, from another dimension possibly. Horrible characters generally signify me dropping the show unless the plot is interesting and the series is short.
animation- does shit move when its supposed to? A giant battle between armies should have everyone swinging or shooting at their enemy and actually effect them. When a voice is heard, the character's mouth should move accordingly; the quality such as 480p isn't usually too important.

sound- I generally care less for accurate sounds. I don't need to have great opening/ending songs, ambiance from the outdoors, or even good voice actors sometimes. There are limitations to budgets and I understand that this is usually one of the things hit by it.

In order for me to give a complete success or failure as a score it would have to be perfect (near impossible) or a blank screen (would never pass as an anime) respectively. So to answer the question, no to all three.

I judge my Anime based on:

Plot - does it have a good story that I can get in to or does it suck

Art/ Animation - do i like how the charaters are drawn and animated

Charater Like Ability - do i like the charaters or do they irritate the mess out of me

*p.s. if the show has a couple of hot guys it doesnt hurt when im rating them lol
*

~Shows also get bonus pooints if they have a great opening theme~

I give every anime I watch to the 5th episode to make me like it if i dont like it by the 5th episode I drop it

I use a 10 star system.

Basically, I'll assume a new show will be good (7). As I watch the show, I focus on plot and character development. Animation really doesn't factor much for me, except when it seriously degrades through the show. I'll pay attention to music, but it also doesn't greatly affect my score.

If the plot is horribly predictable and ordinary, I'll start rating the show down. Likewise, if the characters are boring, flat, and annoying, then I'll rate the show down even more.

The better the plot and characters are, the higher I rate the show. I don't hand out Great (9) or Masterpiece (10) very often. They *should* be hard scores to get.

A masterpiece better have excellent foreshadowing, a tight plot, great concepts, and excellent characters. There can be minor flaws, but overall, it must be a cohesive whole. Madoka Magica is a masterpiece in my book.

A great show will be close to a masterpiece, but might have one or two more serious flaws. Angel Beats! is great in my book. The end could have been done a touch better.

I've never handed out a 0, but that's because I won't waste my time on something that bad. When a show is 5 or below, I consider dropping it. My time is more valuable than watching something that I don't like.

Like any rating system, it's entirely subjective on my part. Your mileage may vary.

Ten Star System

Characters are the number one thing that I look at when watching an anime.

For me a good character must have solid reasons to why the viewer may want to watch the anime/character(including the character's looks). The characters must also have traits that may very well make the viewers like the character, but obviously some villains are meant to be hated, no problems with that. The best example would be the main character and his brother in the anime Kaze No Stigma, both characters are very solid and are very likable. However on the other hand, the main female character, uhhh at times will piss me off.

A story's plot doesn't really affect the anime much for me but if the plot is regarding the interactions between different characters, the plot must be solid aka good. For me I believe that a good character can make up for the flawed plot.(There are exceptions)

Other factors like sound, logic, etc don't really affect my view on an anime.

I have yet to given out a perfect 10 star rating so I guess you can say that I don't really give out perfect scores. Even though i don't quite give out perfect scores, I don't give animes low scores. Like for me I usually don't give anything lower than a 5 to an anime that I have watched completely. Even though the story line/character maybe unlikable, I still try to give at least a 5 star. Even for animes that I have dropped, I still give them a 4 star. However there are a few exceptions as always.

My "system" is a little simple...

Is it up to par with Fullmetal Alchemist or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood? If so, then it's good. Then I ask the same question but with Code Geass. To me, Code Geass is the epitome of anime and then FMA/FMA:B.

I'll make this one short but basically, I just follow the 10 score system:

- The majority of the score comes from story and development
- Characters (their personalities, development, roles in the story, etc) comes next
- Animation and sound are usually judged collectively although one can stand above the other
- The voice mannerisms of the characters
- Adaptation: if it's based on a LN/Manga (and it's something I've read), then I sometimes compare it and see how they contrast/are similar

I rarely give out perfect scores or the "1" for complete failure but sometimes I do consider it.

I grade using the same 10-point scale that I use for MAL. I simply grade on a scale of how much I enjoyed the show. Granted, while all of those categories (story, characters, animation, sound, etc.) do contribute to how much I enjoy a show, I don't try to focus on individual category scores, such as soundtrack, because I don't want to go into a show with a reviewer mindset. Usually I don't remember the soundtrack at the end of the series unless certain tunes were noticeable by being either very good or very bad. I feel like if I tried to focus on each category it would impair my enjoying of the series.

Highly recommended: 10 - Amazing; 9 - Outstanding; 8 - Very Good
Recommended to at least check out: 7 - Good; 6 - Fine
Not recommended: 5 - Mediocre; 4 - Bad
Stay far away: 3 - Very Bad; 2 - Abysmal; 1 - What is this?

In regards to perfect scores, I do give 10's, though rarely (only 3 times out of 78 scores given). However, I don't consider a 10 to be "perfect". I simply use it to clarify what I consider the "best of the best". These titles simply made an impression on me that went even further than the 9's, which aren't far behind. I also have never given a score of 3 or less since I don't usually try to watch shows that I know that I won't like. I don't feel any sense of obligation to watch every series that comes out. Plus, I can watch and enjoy most any genre outside of hentai, so it takes a lot for me to give a bad score.

i dont rewatch anime but wen scoring i just ask "which show i would rather re-watch"
character charm is the MOST important!!! episode length not so much

its hard to judge until AFTER u finish a great series (symptoms = depressed rainy day mood and replay last episode all night T_T

My criteria is basically the same as yours. Though for me the ending plays an important part in how I end up rating an anime. A good example would be Yumekui Merry. I enjoyed it and was going to rate it 7/8 out of 10, but then I watched the ending episode. It was utter garbage. Ended up rating it 4/10.

Depending on how strong/weak an anime scores on my criteria, decides whether or not I continue watching it. K is a good example of this. It looked gorgeous, but after watching some more I realised that I don't like most of the characters, and the design of a few characters really irked me.

My rating system might be slightly different than others.

10 - BEST ANIMU EVAH<3<3 RE-WATCHAN TIAM!!
9 - REALLY good anime, might re-watch (again)!
8 - Pretty good anime, overall very solid and entertaining
7 - Somewhat solid anime, has its weak moments that makes it less entertaining
6 - I'm only watching to finish the story / barely interesting enough to keep me watching
5 - Ugh.. remind me again, why was I watching this?
4 - Can't believe I wasted my time watching this
3 - Why? Just.. no.
2 - So bad, I want to cry.
1 - Are you even trying? I dropped it so hard that it reached the centre of earth

I used to rate Anime from 1 -10 a few years ago, I would take Animation quality and music into account on all shows. However, I would rate different show genres differently. For example, I wouldn't rate a show like Acchi Kocchi on plot, because the show doesnt really have a plot, so rating it on plot would not really make sense. I would tend to rate the aspects of the show that made them what they were. If it was a comedy, I would rate how well the jokes landed with me, and how much I enjoyed watching it over all. If it was a show like Kanon or True Tears, I would rate it by character development, how unique the characters felt in the story and plot.
That made my scoring rather complex, and time consuming, so I decided to stop, I didnt see the benefit of keeping a spreadsheet with that information. Now every now and then I score them on my ANN list based on the score description, so not by numbers.

After taking all of those aspects into account, I would take the average and give it a score, and do a final comment kind of thing of whom might enjoy the show.

I probably had back in the day 5% of the shows I watched set as 10/10, the 10/10 came when i couldnt think of any complains I had with the show, couldnt think of how things could have been better if this or that had been done. I dont think I ever assigned a show less than 4/10. I dont think I have ever seen a show that has done everything wrong. There were some shows that would have low scores on some sections , and better scores on others. I tried to look at shows with a relatively neutral eye, there were genres i didnt like, but they did what they intended to do well. Now, their scores would probably still be lower due to me not linking the show itself, but I tried to give credit where it was due.

Well I don't rate to be honest, kind of kind of stupid to go and rate anime when everyone has their own taste. For me what makes me continue to watch an anime is for the characters, I don't care how crazy or confusing the story might be , as long as I enjoy the characters I'll watch it till the end. I rarely find myself dropping anime because of this system I use :3
