But anime IS cartoon.

Do you know what the word "anime" means? It is the Japanese word for cartoon/animation. The Japanese refer to American cartoons as anime, they don't have some special name for it. It's only people outside Japan that try to make "anime" and "cartoons" different.

You are watching cartoons. Accept that fact and move on.

As long as you do your best in life, why should it matter if you enjoy watching cartoons? I know of couples who are 60+ years old and they watch cartoons.

In the end, people are judgemental and it is up to you whether or not you let that affect your life and your decisions. It's your life, not theirs. If someone can't accept that side of you, maybe you should reconsider your friendship.

Cartoon and anime are the same... it's just anime is purely made by Japanese people and it addresses Japanese cultures and way of life in addition to storytelling.

I don't really argue back with people who say things like, "You're too old to be watching cartoon". People live in the Stone Age.

Some cartoons in the 21st Century aren't for kids anymore, like South Park, it is hardly appropriate for little kids.

Yush and not giving a big explanation.

You need an option: What the hell else would it be?

I voted outright yes. You can add a qualifier (e.g. "adult" or "serious") in conversation if it's THAT necessary.

Cartoons, in English, were originally from single panel caricatures in books or, more commonly, newspapers. they were intended to lampoon the subject. Thomas Nast made the medium very popular in the 1870's. When animation was developed it was pretty easy to project a 'flip book" type of thing as opposed to filming live actors. Thomas Edison's movie process changed that. Largely due to the nature of the entertainment business in the US, animation fell to short subjects featuring cute little comic characters. Max Fleischer, Ub Iwerks, Walt Disney, and too many to list put their considerable talents to work to bring us the classics of yore. Other than a few great features, however, it was felt that people only wanted fluff or superheroes in the format of Sunday comics. The Japanese, and to some extent, the Germans, produced and consumed Graphic Novels and larger illustrated works that ,naturally, expanded into motion picture entertainment. Yes, anime are cartoons, but not all cartoons are anime. Some of my friends have lumped all animation in with badly edited Bugs Bunny and Scooby Doo shorts without seeing Spirited Away or Blood+. I will never convince them to look with new eyes if they don't want to. I also do not have to explain or defend my taste in entertainment.

MHO: Although anime traces etymology to mean animated, the word anime, when used in casual English conversation, refers the the sub-medium of the super-medium: animation; likewise, casual usage of cartoon is also a sub-medium of animation.
