It seems like every other anime has a character catch a cold just because they walked in the rain without an umbrella. WTF? Do Japanese people really have such weak immune systems? For one, rain doesn't cause colds--it's just your immune system overreacting to a nigh-benign virus!

This probably belongs in the Anime section if it deserves to be a thread at all.

To answer your question, any character getting sick is basically a narrative trope to help move the story in the direction the mangaka or screenwriter wants.

It started with anime, but I even see it so much in slice-of-life shows that it made me wonder if they really did have such weak constitutions over in Godzilla's homeland. If a mod deems fit to move this thread, feel free.

No I think this is in the correct thread. He's asking in terms of actual actual Japanese people using anime as an example. And he's right. I can't think of many anime/manga that don't have some character getting a cold.

I've also been curious about whether Japanese people overreact to colds in the same manner (collapsing, seeming like they're near death). I've had plenty of colds and have still been able to go to school/work and it only be annoying.

I assumed anime and manga writers were just writing what they know. But anime and manga characters collapsing as if they got the Black Plague is a bit much.
