Probably going to video games when you're not doing well socially. When you shelter yourself from social life it becomes a harder thing to face later on and there will be less opportunities to socialize.

There's an honesty to the games world that is liberating. There's no diplomacy, no decorum. You tell your enemy you hate him; you show your admiration by confessing the truth. That directness doesn't work with humans, who are masters of subterfuge. Does this dress make me look fat? Do you really love me? Did you miss me? When a person asks this, she doesn't want to know the real answer. She wants you to lie to her. After two years of living in the game world, I had forgotten how many lies it takes to build a relationship.

To be honest i don't think that is a matter of preference its a matter of convenience. Like i play a ton of video games and have a few female friends but not many. But when i play a video game you are on a team and the sense of camaraderie you have with your teammates easily leads into friendship. When i look for a relationship with a girl i basically want to be best friends who have sex. Its just much more difficult to go out and find girls who have similar interests to you.

Not all guys do. If they have some issues with the real world, of course they want to locked themselves up in a room. They want to get rid of everything that has happen and start a new life in a virtual world. With that being said, I've experienced this once when I was in gr5.

After what I had posted on Page 18 of this thread, just a week prior to this post, I'm looking back and laughing at it now. I found someone quite brilliant and wonderful, who greatly enjoys both games and anime, and she is as excited as I am that we are able to enjoy both as a couple. Funny how life can work out that way, often when it's least expected.

fantasy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> reality

every time

I haven't been into video games since Dreamcast died, but I understand.

They're still quite preferable to a relationship with a girl ("real girls" are overrated.)

not all guys , just some. I am currently not in a relationship and I am taking a short break in searching.

Video games should not be put before ANYTHING, not just relationships. The only case I heard was about a guy in South Korea , who played Starcraft for 72 or so hours straight and died due to I think a bladder infection or starvation

I'd rather start dating and have a real life relationship than playing video games. It could be just me, but I find that I becoming bored of playing video games and rather concentrate on other things.

Not every guy does this. Being in a relationship is diffcult for some, for example I just got out of a two year relationship and playing games and watching anime seems to be the easiest way to indulge myself until I can handle the situation. Plus some people have trouble talking to others, and that can be from a number of things. On another note the fact that your asking this question probaly means you havn't actually asked the person why the prefer games over a relationship.

Better question is "why do women prefer meaning less relationships over video games".

Fact is everybody can have friends and family with a lot less commitment. Relationships with family last forever while relationships with the opposite sex rarely do and while they make us happy when we're first in them; they often lead to heart break, depression or kids. (which is ok if that is what you going for but its more likely you'll see unexpected kids. Which can ruin you life through heavy child support or can ruin your kids life if all you do is argue and stay together for only the kids sake.)

Then there is what you do in the relationship. Most of the women I've known want to sit around and watch movies every night while nagging me to spend all my spare time fixing or working on stuff leaving no time to myself; while they bullshit with thier friends and family all day about who has the most useful spouse.

I guess when it comes down to it; unless you find a soul mate, someone who shares the same interests with you or want to create a family; your better off focusing on your career and current relationships rather pursuing a spouse especially when you don't have anything in common.

I don't necessarily agree with what follows here, but this is what I think the perspective many relationship-less straight males have:

No one really "prefers" video games to having a fulfilling relationship with someone. The problem lies in many males' view of what constitutes a fulfilling relationship. Especially today, many young men look at their parents, see the misery and care written on their faces and ask themselves, "Is this whole thing really worth it? Are my folks really as happy as they say they are?" Now that's if their parents aren't divorced, which only makes the outlook on relationships even bleaker.

Also, as women become more empowered in their agency and freedom to direct their own lives, men can feel their privilege slipping away. It's a phenomenon that is only just beginning to catch up to the "Straight White Male" segment of society; other parts have long since gone through it and are about to come up through the other end. So why take up the traditional role of provider and breadwinner at a certain age when women are proving that they can take care of themselves? What we're seeing is a response to a cultural shift along sexual lines. Men in many countries around the world are simply dropping societal expectations that they feel are gradually becoming irrelevant. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy in those same men, however, as there is a part of society that still expects them to uphold the same old roles. It doesn't matter whether there is any reward for assuming those traditional roles; society's voice is powerful, and most people listen to it.

Many of the societies going through this phenomenon will wind up re-defining the nature of relationships between men and women. I don't personally think it is anything to be scared of. Change is always scary, but it will be the "new normal" for the generation that comes after ours. Straight males are just going to have to find a new niche to fill, one that fulfills them and the people they choose to be in relationships with.

So the question 'Why do guys prefer video games over real life relationships?' seems best interpreted as 'Why are guys abandoning traditional social expectations?'

tl;dr Because wimmins are re-defining social roles
