Lizzie was very glad that it seemed that Kyle had a better way because moving this would have called for lots of muscle that she hadn't been building while hiding in camouflage from the walkers. She nodded, "three times" she said in conformation. She began taking a good loong look at their surrounds and continued to look being careful to look over the area behind her as well.

She kept her ears perked for danger as well and wanted very badly for them to encounter another ally as the thought on three against the world in such a literal sense was intimating but still better than an hour or so ago.

Lizzie heard a cheer from under the Tahoe and smiled as that was more than she expected. But maybe today was a good day.. or at least better than yesterday. Glad she had met Kyle, and totally offset by the change and though she was terrified at the sudden appearance of a plentiful wondering horde.

"Yes." She said with as much certainty as she could muster. Nervous because being able to drive and racing away from walkers were two different things.

But she was sure she could get them away... "Kyle, won't the noise from the engine simply draw more?"

Regardless, Lizzie got into the drivers seat and adjusted the rear view mirror after buckling herself in.

-"Well better that than getting eaten trying to hide. I have a Marine stuck in the backseat of the Humvee. We have to ditch the Tahoe. Besides, the Tahoe doesn't have that."

Kyle nodded in the direction of the M134A1 chaingun mounted to the roof.

-"Come on, the Humvee is automatic and there's no keys it's just an ignition switch on the left side of the steering column, rest is elementary."

Kyle moved as he spoke, flipping over the security latches on the doors so Lizzie could get in. When she was seated, he looked back towards the horde, they were moving slowly but steadily closer... Kyle ran back to the Tahoe and quickly unstrung the cable from the undercarriage axle linkage and dropped the winch hook on the ground. Running back to the Humvee he sprang up over the front bumper launching off the winch electric wind switch. The winch spooled up and quickly recovered the length of cable which had been affixed to the Tahoe neatly wrapping back onto it's rotor spool as Kyle clambered over the hood and roof kicking open the top hatch as he went. He poked his head down to check on Jackson who was now wide awake and gripping her rifle to her chest.

-"What's going on Staff Sergeant? Who's the civvie?"

-"Easy Corporal, she's a survivor like us. She's also going to get this bucket moving so I can shoot. Just relax and keep a fresh magazine racked. Keep the hatches and doors secured, we've got inbound."

Jackson's face paled slightly but she nodded and simply responded "Aye, Staff Sergeant' then began rummaging through the weapons on the back cargo compartment for magazines and chambered rounds.

Kyle looked back at the advancing horde and saw they had closed to within 30 feet. As he looked the engine rumbled to life, surprisingly without issues and he turned back into the open hatch.

-"Lizzie punch it, take this road out of town, don't stop til we hit Barstow. IGNORE what happens next. "

With that, Kyle flipped into the hatch and settled into the gunner seat which was nothing more than a thick belt spanning the gap under the circular hatch opening. Propping his feet against the cargo plates, he spooled up the electric rotor on the M134 as the Humvee lurched like a lunging Panther. By this time the first of the horde had closed distance and was clipped by the front bumper falling over but grabbing onto the forward ram bars. Kyle cursed and released the minigun controls and pulled his sidearm. Quick aiming down the barrel he fought to steady his aim as the bucking swerving vehicle his bounced him around in the open hatch. Kyle focused down the sights again and discharged twice into the Walker's flailing head as the Humvee roared forward the diesel engine sounding like the naked peal of cracking thunder and the Colt 1911 spat fire, once... twice. A spray of blood and the front driver side tire bucked as it crushed the lifeless corpse under the merciless treads. Re-holstering his weapon, Kyle grabbed onto the minigun controls and wrenched them around in time to see a snarling decomposing face less than 2 feet climbing up the back hatch cover like a spider monkey. Kyle screamed and thumbed the rotor and fire buttons simultaneously. The M134 roared a buzzsaw howl and the Walker disappeared in a dark red mist. Kyle released and recentered the weapon letting loose a couple more bursts of the mounted turret turning asphalt to dust clouds, cement chips, blood, tatters of clothing and body parts getting flung up from the death chorus of the M134's song. As the Humvee shifted into 4th gear Kyle scanned the horizon once more out of habit and then slumped down through the hatch.

-"Everyone okay down here?"

Noticing that the blood smeared on her hands and shoes was hardened she was relieved that since she had found Kyle she no longer had to smell dead. Though she was excited to finally have the chance for a real bath. Or shower if the plumbing was unaffected thus far.

Excited to see a gun on the top of the vehicle, Lizzie couldn't help but think of the situation reminding her of the adventure movies she used to watch. She made it a priority to remember what she could of life without zombies as she thought that's what helped her keep wanting to live even if she knew those times were long gone.

"Er... Hello..."Lizzie greeted the corporal and suspected that those in the armed forces saw civilians as weak. Maybe she was; the notion was scary.

She pushed the gas a little bit to signal that she was about to take off and Kyle should brace himself. But then she felt silly since these two could handle themselves without her treating them as civilians. She pushed the gas to twenty, then forty, then sixety and looked in her rear view mirror to see how close danger was. But as soon as she shifted her gaze she bumped a corpse on the ground and the car jumped as if going over a speed bump. But a speed bump at sixty was still quite a bump. She saw the walkers coming towards her, moving fasted than she expected.

Speeding up to fifty, sixty, seventy, Lizzie kept her eyes on the road and planned so she wouldn't hit another corpse, even though there were a few thrown around the highway out of the city, but as they got further on she was relieved she no longer had to hit those stupid grates on the side of the road to stop speeding.

Lizzie obeyed the order to speed it and slowly kept getting faster though she knew the gas would take a hit. Lizzie wasn't sure where they were going but was confident she'd be told where to go when appropriate.

"I'm okay, we can do this." Lizzie said confidently when Kyle came down to check up on them.

As Donovan was walking down I-5 on his way to Los Angeles, he heard the roar of a humvee coming towards him. As he crouched down, Remus started growling and looking behind them at the trees. As he turned around, he saw a Walker in the distance coming right towards him. As Donovan shouldered his M16 and through the digital scope and gripped the pistol grip that was installed under the parrel, he took a deep breath and let it out slowly as he lined the cross-hairs up with the Walkers head. Donovan squeezed the trigger and watched as the Walkers head was blown off, then He slung his rifle over his shoulder and turned around, waving his arms in the air as the humvee came closer.

Seeing the strange person waving Lizzie called to the Corporal near her. "There's a man waving over here. The walkers are too far to catch up. I'm going to stop for him." Lizzie was excited, maybe there were others that weren't walkers. Then she felt embarrassed that she told the Corporal what she was going to do instead of asking for permission. Oh well, if she was right in this decision maybe she'd got a smidgen of respect. The car slowed down for this person who better not be an odd walker but she just smiled. One bullet in the head would fix that; at least it was alone. She just hoped that Kyle didn't shoot him as the car slowed. She realized that her hands had been sweating with tis adrenaline and that some f the previously dried blood on her hands had been smeared into the steering wheel.

-"All good here Staff Sergeant".

Corporal Kelly Jackson replied when Kyle poked his head down from the roof turret, she seemed to have recovered a bit from the shock of the latest Walker incursion as well as her injury and what's more seemed to have taken her mind off the horror of their current predicament. Kyle nodded at her but she had seemed to have busied herself taking inventory of the vehicles small arms and limited supplies.

Kyle spared a glance over at their latest addition, Elisabeth Walker or "Lizzie" as he'd grown to call her, was silently driving the Humvee. He took stock of her position: white knuckles, her head alertly looking left and right (scanning by the look of it) and her rigid, fully upright sitting position (she was a nervous wreck it seemed) and pondered her name. Walker... ironic considering Kyle had nearly shot her for looking like one. He still didn't fully understand what the hell had happened that she'd go to such lengths to look like one of them but he considered it closely and figured maybe she was trying to hide. Truth be told there would be supplies, water, food and medical supplies in the stranded vehicles jammed up in the I-15 gridlock where he'd found her. Additionally, maybe she was too scared to venture out alone and figured it might only be a matter of time before someone like Kyle and Jackson managed to stumble across her. Whatever the reason, fortune favored the young woman since it was Kyle who found her before the Walkers. Or maybe she found him?

A sudden crack split Kyle's attention. A sharp, staccato spike of sound and then Lizzie's interjection broke Kyle's pensive reflection and he stuck his head back up through the turret well and gripped hold of the M134. Lizzie was slowing the Humvee down for what appeared to be a man... with a dog, flagging them down. Over his shoulder was a M16A4 rifle but his uniform was not the 3 tone digital Marine Combat Pattern of the Marine Corps. Additionally, where did he find the dog? Kyle eyed the man with an intense look from behind the turret but looked a bit passed him and saw a Walker, it's head splattered out across the cement of the I-15 N. At the distance relative to the newcomer the range was reasonable, maybe 25 m. Close Quarters but looked like a clean shot. If this pace kept up they were gonna have a full house in the Humvee faster than he expected. Furthermore, the man looked to be a soldier and if anything they would survive longer with individuals not prone to cracking under pressure.

Corporal Jackson, leaned over to open the security latch on the front passenger door and Kyle waited for the man and his dog to make their move.

As the humvee rolled to a stop, Donovan jogged around the front of it, then suddenly stomped his foot down, smashing the skull of a walker that had somehow survived being dragged under the humvee for a couple miles. As he looked up, he saw saw a purple haired woman covered in gore sitting in the drivers seat, a black haired man in a marine uniform up in the weapon turret currently swiveling around an M134 minigun, and a woman in the back seat who looked like she was wounded. As he motions for Remus to get in, Donovan looks in his satchel for bandages and makes sure they're secured properly. As he sits down in the front passenger seat, he turns around and addresses the marine who looks to be in charge. "PFC Downes. Nice to meet you." As he take a closer look at her, Donovan sees that the injured woman is named Corporal Jackson. "Are you ok?"

Glad that she was not being reprimanded for picking up another survivor, Lizzie smiled and thought of patting the dog as she did love friendly canines but held back because her hands needed to be washed badly. But until they found some water she just tried to ignore it. As
Donovan offered bandages she blushed at being so indecent.

"I just had camouflage on when Kyle and I found each other not too long ago. I have no physical wounds. Thank you though!" She smiled to show apparition, glad she didn't need it.

"So where are we headed Kelly? How will I know when to stop driving?" Lizzie smiled eagerly.

Donovan reaches out and rubs Remus' ears. Then he takes stock of his equipment and starts modifying his rifle with parts he scavenged from the surplus store in the last town he was in.

Corporal Kelly Jackson blinked at the question then leaned over and tugged on Kyle's pant leg. Kyle stuck his head down through the turret well and Kelly replied:

-"Staff Sergeant, where we going?"

Kyle blinked at her then the rest of the occupants in the cab, noting Lizzie's eyes regarding him for a couple of quick glances in the rearview and the the new arrival, PFC Downes, who appeared to be a soldier was fiddling with aftermarket parts and adding them to the M16 sitting in his lap. The dog sitting on the only remaining seat and sprawled across the cargo plates to be close to Downes looked up and regarded Kyle with curious doggy eyes.

-"Well... it's getting late. We can't really afford to keep driving at night so we'll have to find a place to hole up. USMC is scattered, evac zones and refugee camps setup by FEMA were all in city and now overrun. For now, I say we hit Barstow which is probably an hour or so along this road. Thing is I don't want to pass through when we can't really see what's what. The power's down for most of LA so I assume the grid is out for whole sections of Cali, Barstow included. We should try and find a truck stop somewhere. Park the Humvee, rest up in shifts, clear out what food and supplies we can and hopefully get some diesel and a second vehicle. A truckstop is generally small too so PFC Downes and I can clear and secure the area in a shorter time with less chance of high volume contacts. Maybe one, two or so. When all Hell broke loose only the terrified and the crazies stayed in one spot. So chances are likely only Walkers we run into out there will be those that wandered out from the cities or were employees that got bit and couldn't get out. As for where we're trying to get to big picture: I have family in Las Vegas. Dad's a gun freak too... chances are likely he and mom will have a place secure where we can resupply and just bunker down til we get a better plan. From here that's probably 400 or so miles. But there's a lot of gas stations on the way. What do you all think?"

"I think vegas is a good idea. And call me Wolf. Everybody did in my unit, mainly cuz of Remus here." Wolf reaches out and rubs Remus' ears again, then replaces his standard scope with a high powered, multi-ranged, digital scope and clips a flashlight and laser sight to the side of the barrel of his M16. "And i think i saw a dune buggy with a reinforced, armored rollcage a few miles back, but i couldn't get it started because the spark plugs were bad. Do you have any spare ones?"

Kyle paused at the name of familiarity, it was so... foreign so un-military but not unheard of. Call signs and nick names were common code names on wide band frequencies since they were easier to say and understand when messages had the risk of being garbled or static filled. Still, it bugged Kyle. It was just so informal but then again, these were different times. For all he knew Kyle and Jackson were the last two Marines alive in northern LA maybe all of LA and surrounding. Who was he to judge?

-"Sure thing then, Wolf."

Kyle spoke the name tenatively, it just felt a little strange. But he moved past it and looked the... well, he guessed it was a Wolf in the eye and spoke it's name as the soldier had referred to him.

-"...and Remus"

Kyle smiled and the animal cocked it's head slightly but panted happily.

-"Spark plugs? hmm, maybe. We have a small maintenance kit next to the emergency lamps and spare tire in the rear. But what you see is what you get. Corporal Jackson's unit was with the Pendleton Vehicle Maintenance crews and half that stuff is for the M1 we left behind at the checkpoint she was assigned to before it fell. Additionally we've got a few MRE's some spare radios, tactical lamps and 2 medkits, one of which we had to use the disinfectant, powdered cauter, sewing kit and most of the gauze for Jackson who'd been shot in the shoulder and missed her flack. Aside from that it's mainly small arms and munitions. There's a 203 with 5 HE's, M1014 with about 25 or 30 shells, 250 rounds of 5.56 and a M40A1 with scope and about 15 rounds of ammunition. Basically what's on the stock and loaded in the magazine. It was... a friends, the only thing I could find of him. We also have a spare vest and M4. I pulled it from the checkpoint guard station just before it was overrun. ACOG with kill flash and 30 rounds loaded. We have 2 liters of water not including what's in the camelbaks and that's it... oh and my 1911. I have about 50 rounds total. I was with a tactical assault group when our Osprey went down so I also have a case of sound suppressors and 2 NVG's. The suppressors are for 5.56 and I've got one for my .45 but I think only 2 rifle suppressors are still salvageable. The case was literally on fire when I pulled it. I have 2 M-67's HE's on my vest and some det cord for breaching. Rest is IFAK and MBITR."

"Well, i have a small civilian medkit, spare M16 parts, some venison wrapped in butchers paper, and some other stuff." Wolf puts his hand to his belt and pulls a pouch filled with ninja weapons into view. "I also have several kunai and shuriken that i got a couple years ago for Christmas." As he looks out the window, Wolf sees the dune buggy. "Stop! The dune buggy is back there!"
Posted 11/2/12 , edited 11/2/12
Kyle didn't really see the point of a buggy. It couldn't take direct impacts for running over Walkers, had proprietary vehicle parts, louder than the humvee in general operation, the driver and the engine were exposed which was the worst possible thing when surrounded and was heavier and had steeper turn in and roll over issues than a quad. Additionally it could only fit 1 or 2 people at most and couldn't carry cargo. But the PFC, "Wolf" as he liked to be called seemed to have his heart set on it. Kyle could see the vehicle as a reasonable reconnaissance vehicle and but it didn't really save them anything on gas. He'd prefer instead if they could get a hold of either a Jeep Commander with Rubicon Package designed for offroad and extreme reliability in between maintenance tune ups or a lifted Chevy or Dodge. Had powerful four wheel drive transmissions and even better suspension setups and were equally good at both on and off road driving. Their engines were V6's and would drink regular octane fuel as well. Most importantly they were fully enclosed for defense against walkers, rated for desert driving which is where they were going and had A/C. But he decided against voicing any of these concerns. He felt keeping the mood light would be the best option.

-"Lizzie, stop the vehicle. Jackson, help Wolf check for sparkplugs if we have any. I'll get on the turret and keep an eye out. If we find some spark plugs we'll make a detour."

Lizzie obediently hit the breaks at Kyle's word. She scanned the horizon for danger as well as the rear view mirror.
