When the Humvee pulled to a stop, Kyle did a slow scan of the horizon and withdrew back down into the turret well. Bent low he stepped carefully around the piled weapons that Jackson had organized and rummaged around pulling the spare vest and grabbed the guard house M4. then stepped back over Remus and exited out the driver side rear passenger door. He rapped on the plexiglas window to get Lizzie's attention and motioned her to put the humvee in park and step out. It was time for some basic weapon training.

As Kyle got out, Wolf got out and went around to the back of the humvee and opened the door to look for some spark plugs. when he finds a couple that looks like they might fit in the dune buggy, he takes them over and starts working on it.

Kyle watched Wolf begin tinkering with the buggy for a few moments then remembered something. Opening the driver side passenger door he rummaged around the supplies and pulled the half burned case of sound suppressors from the detritus and set it out on the concrete of the freeway before poking his head back in. Jackson hadn't moved or said anything in the last few minutes and just seemed to be staring off into space.

-"Corporal..."

Jackson jerked like she'd been touched with a low voltage current and turned to face him, her eyes terror filled and distant. Looks like she was reverting.

-"Come out here and help me prep these suppressors. I need to get Lizzie some rifle time but we have to be smart about it. Hopefully, we'll have more than 2 suppressors for the AR's to go around but I need someone to help me oil them up."

Jackson blinked a few times, nodded with a soft spoken "Aye, Staff Sergeant" and exited the humvee gingerly favoring her injured shoulder and made her way around the front. Kyle watched her a moment noting her movements and then tipped his head slightly to Lizzie who was still sitting quietly in the driver's side.

-"Hey lazy bones, come on and step out. I promise it's not as bad as it seems. Besides when or if we lose the humvee and have to travel on foot. Everyone here will need some training in defending themselves and the group. So what'cha say?"

As he continues working on the buggy, Wolf inspects it and sees that there is a shotgun strapped under the carriage, along with a box of shells under the seat. He signals to Kyle and holds the shotgun over his head.

Kyle cracked open the melted weapons case and fished out the suppressors from the molded foam inserts. They appeared to be in reasonable condition and there were 6 of them. But only test firing them would tell. For now they'd just have to oil them all and wait til they were about to go mobile before testing. Kyle looked up when he saw Wolf flagging him, his arm waving with what looked like a shotgun over his head.

-"Jackson, just get these prepped, I'm gonna check and see what Wolf found".

Jackson nodded numbly and began unscrewing the cap to a small clear plastic eye dropper filled with buffering oil for the suppressors. Kyle spared her a quick glance then turned and trotted over to where Wolf was standing. Kyle looked at the shotgun and let out a low whistle.

-" Wow, nice find. This is a USAS-12 full automatic 8 round magazine, detachable."

Kyle turned the weapon over and checked the chamber before handing it back to Wolf.

"I think I've got a spare 2 point sling in the rifle pile, you're call if you want one. Just be mindful of the ammo consumption these ones have a fast burn and dispersion is also really high so you'll need a fairly wide fire sector clear in front of you before you shoot. What's the status on this vehicle? Can you get it going?"

In answer to his question, Wolf jumps into the dune buggy and turns the key. The engine immediately comes to life with a soft rumble that is only audible from a few yards away. "Its in great condition. all that was wrong with it was the spark plugs. Plus, it seems that the engine has been modified to be soundless after you get a few yards away." Wolf drives the buggy over to the humvee and parks it. Wolf inspects the shotgun, then looks in his bag. "Ahh haa! i knew i had some extra shells in here, along with spare parts." He pulls a box of twenty shells out of his bag, and starts checking them for damage. "these all looks good." He puts the shells back in his bag, then remembers that he has a spare sling, which he takes out and attaches to the shotgun.

Lizzie stepped out of the drivers seat and looked around carefully before stepping onto the cold earth. She smiled and turned towards Kyle, eager to begin her training as she saw no end to the undead plague.

"Okay, I'm ready, let's do this."

She was eager to learn how to defend herself and attack back. All those nights of hiding from the undead was finally going to be put behind her.

"I've never fired a weapon." She sheepishly admits, hoping it would be a skill she could learn rather quickly.

"The main thing to remember is be prepared for the recoil. Shooting a weapon looks easy, but if you dont hold it right, it could end up missing the target and hurting you instead." Donovan scans the horizon as he steps out of the dune buggy.

Lizzie recalls how she had seen rifles being held. "So I'll keep the back against my shoulder for recoil." She smiled and propped the rifle up against her shoulder, aiming out in the distance but didn't fire for fear of the noise calling the undead. "Okay, I'll conserve ammunition but how do I know when to restock bullets?"

"You mean reload. When you pull the trigger and the rifle doesn't fire, then thats one way to tell that you need to reload."

Lizzie felt silly, but brushed it off, "Haha, yep. Thanks, it's all new to me. I'll learn though." Shrugging her shoulders she scanned the horizon just to make sure they were relatively safe for the time being. Lizzie was unsure of which model hers was, "What is this weapon called?"

Kyle frowned slightly but dismissed the woman's apparent lack of concern for proper shooting. She was a civilian it wasn't her job to know or care, however if they were to survive each of them would need to know the tools that would get them through the next day. Guns were just another trick in their very, VERY limited magician's bag but it was also the resource they currently had the most of. Lizzie woudn't be any good to the group or herself if she couldn't mince a Walker in 1 or 2 shots total.

Kyle looked over to see that Jackson had completed the suppressor preparations and he ordered the Corporal to go man the turret and equip one of the NVG scopes. It just wasn't safe to not have someone on [watch]. The evening sun was quickly disappearing and they had maybe a half hour of daylight left. Still with everyone already armed there was no reason to not get everyone up to speed. He stepped over to Lizzie and stood to her left so she could see and mirror his actions.

-"Couple things to start off before we get into the actual firing of the weapon, Lizzie."

Kyle spread his legs and assumed a combat crouch; right leg forward a half step with his left directly below his hip. He squared his chest and shoulders to a full alignment facing forward and then leveled the gun to his eyes as he brought the weapon parallel to the deck pulling the stock in firm against his shoulder, his supporting hand clasping tight to the forward rail hand guard. He spoke quickly but calmly as he modeled each movement.

-"First and foremost is your grounding. If your balance and weight aren't founded you'll not be able to make a solid connection with whatever you're trying to shoot. Since Walkers don't get intimidated, hitting close isn't going to cut it. When you shoot you shoot to kill. So take a look at what I've got going on here. I'm right hand dominant so I will have that leg as my forward Point of Control. With that leg I can pivot, I put my weight on when firing and use to change my firing position from standing to crouch to prone."

Kyle cocked his head over to look at Lizzie and make sure she was following along. Satisfied he continued.

-"Next your body alignment should always be head on to your target or the direction you want to be facing. When Jackson and I headed out of LA we passed a lot of looters amid the chaos. Most had guns, small caliber but they still shot bullets and bullets of any size can kill if aimed in your soft fleshy bits. So if we run into the same down the road, you need to face your target head on. The SAPI plates inserted into the front and back of the vest I put on you won't work if you present the side of your body to the enemy and their shots. it will enter in through your armpit or stomach where the coverage of the vest is lowest and kill you before you can shoot back."

Kyle again demonstrated common shooting positions used by amateurs [that] essentially negated the benefits of wearing the Marine plate carrier. When he was finished he looked over at Lizzie to make sure she was following along.

-"There's just a bit left to go over but you have any questions so far? There's no point in leaving til you're comfortable. We might not get another chance for a while."

Wolf whistles to remus and gets in the dune buggy. "I'm gonna go ahead and get some sleep. i'll take a watch leter tonight, ok?"
Posted 11/12/12 , edited 11/12/12
Kyle nodded to Wolf and tossed him a prepped suppressor for his M16.

-"Can't sleep yet soldier, this place is too exposed gotta roll soon. If you can do me a favor and take Remus with you on a patrol north, just scout out what we got in front of us. Suppressors on from here [out], have to minimize our footprint. take a walkie from the back of the Humvee, we're on channel 6 substation 4, should be programmed with full charge. Think you can manage in the sand rail?"

"Hell yeah i can. I just about grew up in one of these." Donovan grabs the suppressor in mid-air and attaches it to his M16, then pulls a pair of CB radios out of his bag. He tosses one to Kyle, then installs the other one in the buggy. "These CB's are battery powered, plus they have a huge range. I think its about the size of Alaska or so." He goes and grabs a walkie talkie from the back of the humvee and puts it on his belt, then jumps in the buggy again and drives off to the north, going off-road.
