Kyle watched the young Soldier drive off in the sand rail the engine drone trailing off. He turned the CB over in his hand a Motorola by the looks of it though the manufacturer stamp was missing. Could be a ICOM maybe but it wasn't like any he'd seen before. The larger vehicle mounted one in the Humvee was a newer model. He clicked the transmit button twice before he spoke into the handset.

-"Marine One Five to Wolf Recon, need a sitrep every 15 mikes, if you're overdue by 5 we pack up and come in guns blazing after you. How copy, over?"

As night was slowly creeping across the sky Lizzie mimicked Kyle's combat crouch, aligning her shoulders to face forward and was very grateful to be sown in depth how to handle this weapon. She felt grounded and in-control so she peered into the horizon confidently and confidently with Kyle's guidance. She knew she needed to be able to kill any undead who approached. After aiming at a few rocks in the distance and feeling out the aim and her SAPI plates and targeting she turned back towards Kyle and said confidently, "Thank you, Kyle."

Donovan took the handset and talked into it. "I'm doing good. no hostiles so far. How are things back at base? over." Donovan drove the sand rail over a hill and slammed on the brakes as he almost went over a cliff. He then backed up and drove around the cliff, stopping when he came across a motorcycle with a walker trapped under it. "Marine One Five, this is Wolf Recon. I've found a single walker trapped under a motorcycle that looks like it will still work. About to execute and retrieve. Over." He set the hand set back in the holder, then drew his desert eagle and walked over to the motorcycle, shooting the walker in the head as he got in range. He picked the bike up and walked it over to the sand rail, then tyed it to the back. He got in the drivers seat, then headed back towards camp after scanning the valley ahead of him thoroughly.

Kyle smiled at Lizzie, she was learning fast. Woman absorbed information like a sponge so that's good. What was better is she took the new info with the zeal of a person who fully understood the gravity of her situation. Kyle decided he liked her and was going to keep an eye out for her as much as one of his own squad. He turned back to her and looked at her stance and positioning. He gently corrected a few minor misplacements of her hands and slightly nudged her left foot a bit more under her to give her a cleaner stance. After he smiled and stepped up to the muzzle of her weapon off to one side and held his rifle up and tipped to one side to demonstrate another quick tip before he affixed a suppressor to her weapon.

-"So your stance is good, your hold on the weapon is good. You will probably need to commit both to muscle memory but that will come with time and practical use. One last thing, whenever you have someone or something you don't want to kill downrange of your weapon, slide your trigger finger back over the frame so it's pointing forward away from the death lever."

He waited for Lizzie to mirror the move as he demonstrated then fit the suppressor over her barrel when she had and was looking at him once more. When the suppressor was fit on the front end and the attachment clip clicked over he stepped away again and scanned the nearside of the I-15 north for a suitable target. Seeing none he turned and scanned the far side. It wasn't smart to rile a potential hornets nest but the sound of the gunshot was far more worrisome than the sound of breaking glass or a round impacting car metal.

-"Alright so you've got about 30 rounds in your active magazine. We have 250 on board in an ammo can and another 300 in my 3 day that I forgot about and maybe another 200 in Jackson's. That vest also if you notice has 6 full magazines on the front panel, which you probably did notice since that's contributing to most of the weight. What your currently wearing around your chest is about 65 pounds total so generally speaking you'll only need to wear it for the ammo to have it on hand. We'll pull the SAPI's once we get past Barstow and save you 35 pounds. Just want to wait til we get outside the city before I take those two insurance guarantees out of your vest. Go ahead and assume the firing position and switch your weapon over to "Semi" that's the first click over and take a squint down the scope. You don't have to look too hard just rest your eyes level with the lens. See that red hatchback? The prius? It's about your 12 o clock position and should be right in front of you about 50 meters. Go ahead and squeeze off a couple rounds and get a feel for the kick of the gun. There isn't too much but since your new it will be good practice to familiarize with the response of your weapon."

Kyle's radio crackled to life and he listened to Wolf's response. There was a lot of wind feedback, common for a commercial two way. he could imagine Remus with his mouth open, big doggy smile on as he grinned into the wind while Wolf drove. The report of a lone walker ahead of them wasn't normally an issue. Wolf did have those crazy looking knives on him afterall.

--"...going to execute and retrieve. over."

A distant peal of thunder echoed sullenly across the silence of the valley...

Kyle's face sank... "shit."

He turned to Lizzie.

-"Practice is gonna have to wait. I told him to use suppressed weapons only... either way we have to roll, can you drive for me again Lizzie? Jackson, get down below and square away the freight, we're moving now!"

Donovan looked up as a peal of thunder echoed out of the valley behind him. "Marine one, this is Wolf Recon. I just heard gunshots coming from a valley behind me. Advise action. Over." Donovan pressed the brakes and comes to a halt, pulling out his desert eagle and reloading the clip.

(The desert eagles i have are naturally silenced. they have them built in.)

Lizzie felt out her edited position and tried to memorize everything from the proper position to her viewing angle. She paid special attention to the instruction to sliding her trigger finger over the frame so it's pointing forward to keep from shooting an allied target as that may be important to remember as much as remembering her combat crouch. Lizzie slid her trigger finger over the frame to memorize the muscle movements. Glad there was a way to suppress the noise not just because her ears won't want that distraction but also because the dead seemed to have a sense of hearing.

Lizzie was glad to be carrying 65 lbs. of armor and had no plans to take it off unless she needed to as the protection that it offered was more real than any security that she had felt in what felt like a long time. Glad she actually knew something Lizzie nodded in response to Kyle, feeling a rush of adrenaline as she worried for Donovan's safety at Kyle's que.

Kyle rushed to close up the half melted suppressors case and hastily tossed that and the spare tool kit that Wolf had used to rummage around for parts on the sand rail into the back of the humvee. He spared a glance up and saw that Jackson was slowly easing the turret around in a semi arc and adjusting the zoom on her NVG's monocle. She let out a slow moan when she turned approximately south south west in the turret and simply stared off into the distance.

-"Jackson... Corporal! Sit Rep!"

--"the entire freeway Staff Sergeant... 60-70 meters out it's like one big pack of those things."

-"Jackson get below and grab me the spare Kevlar and IR scope. Lizzie, get in the driver seat i'm going to give you the spare helmet and NVG scope from the tank A-Gunner that Corporal Jackson gives to you. There's a flip switch on the right of the right eye lens. That's the on switch. Rest is automatic and hands free. Just drive like normal. Resolution is approximate day time conditions so just get us heading north towards Barstow. We'll meet up with Wolf when we see him, I'll give him the go code once I can get back on the turret!"

With that he scrambled over the back of the humvee, clawing like a possessed man over to the gunner hatch and hopped down into the well. Spinning the turret over to the south west he turned up the magnification on his NVG's as the last rays of the sun sank into the grim horizon. Sure enough a living, thronging wave of the dead shambled like a haggard, hungry thing towards the small clutch of survivors. Range about 50 meters.

-"Lizzie let's get this thing moving!"

When he gets no response, Donovan quickly looks in his bag and pulls out customized infrared/night vision goggles and puts them on, then revs the engine of the sand rail and takes off towards the humvees location. He pulls a GPS device out of his bag and sets it up on dash, turning it on and setting it to lock on to the GPS chip that was in the CB that he had given to Kyle. Donovan took the handset and started talking into it. "Marine One, this is Wolf Recon. I am heading back to the humvee. I repeat, i am heading back to the humvee. feel free to make manuevers. i will be able to track you. Over."
Donovan raced up a hill in the sand rail, catching air as he came off of the top, and landed on a small group of walkers. As he skidded, he saw the highway in the distance, and heard faint gunshots and saw small flashes of lights. As he looked at the highway with the goggles in Infrared mode, he saw a fast moving red dot moving away from a sea of red. "Crap. That is a lot of Walkers. At least a citys worth." He took off down the hill and pulled alongsiide the humvee a couple minutes later.

(the goggles look like snowboarding goggles.)

Lizzie was about to take off and find Donovan with Kyle on the back and her weapon safely placed between the seat and her leg so she could feel it since the ability to grab a weapon was vital to having one. But just as she was about to drive she heard Donovan pulling up. Michelle was glad that Donovan came so quickly at just the right moment.; but then heard the gunfire from the distance and turned her head towards Donovan, "There are people there?" a pretty obvious question as the undead did not fire rifles. "We should see what we can do. Maybe we can gain another ally." She waited a split second for further instruction though she was considering taking off since the ability to save a life was a very strong reality. Too strong in fact, to ignore as Lizzie pushed the gas so they started moving quickly towards the mob of undead.

Commercial cut scene.

End commercial.

Donovan cussed as Lizzie took off towards the walker horde, then floored the pedal in his sand rail, taking off after her. as he got close to her, there was a huge explosion from the middle of the horde, wiping it out completely and causing a shockwave to hit the humvee and sand rail.

As Lizzie felt the shockwave and hit the breaks to steady herself. She looked at Donovan pleading that they might find another survivor, as if he could alter the harsh reality, but a few moments later she closed her eyes then grit her teeth and began turning the car around to prepare to speed away from the horde; all she could hear was the grunts and heavy breathing that came from those damned undead. She stayed at a speed that she knew Donovan could catch up easily but that the Walkers couldn't.

As he starts to turn the sand rail around, Donovan sees a small girl stagger through the flames from the explosion. He whistles at Remus and points at her. "Guard!" Remus races over to the girl as Donovan jumps out. Donovan runs over and pulls out his desert eagles as a pair of walkers walk out of the flames. Remus takes them down as Donovan gets to the girl and picks her up, carrying her over to the sand rail. He puts her in the back seat as Remus jumps into the front seat. He gets into the drivers seat and races after Liz, grabbing the headset and activating it. "Liz,! I found a survivor! its a little girl. i'm following you now."

Gasping as er heart skipped a beat or two Lizzie couldn't help but smile fondly, glad that Donovan (and Remus) had jumped into action at the best possible time! She was very impressed by the training that Remus must have received and was glad he got it. She continued driving, looking in the horizon and in her rear-view mirrors for dangers that needed to be avoided. "Where are we going?" Lizzie asked into the walkie talkie.

Donovan speeds up and comes up beside Lizzie. "II don't know. i was going to ask you. Looks like Kyle passed out or something. He's slumped over the mounted machine gun." Donovan looks back as the little girl wakes up. On second glance, the 'little girl' looks to actually be a short teenager, with blonde hair.

"Hi. Whats your name?" The girl looks around in a panic, then settles down and looks at Donovan. "My name is Neko."

Knowing that Kyle would need to catch up, Lizzie worried about losing each other in this wasteland, "There's no danger here yet, let's wait up for Kyle. I'd love to meet this girl you saved." Pulling into an area where they had 360 vision so no walkers could sneak up, Lizzie was glad that even after the earth went to hell there was still companionship to be found.
