I saw a couple of threads for favorite opening and ending themes, which got me wondering what you all think about it. Do you prefer one over the other? Is there a difference? And something else to think about -- would you prefer if studios stopped putting in openings and endings and instead used that time on the ACTUAL STORYLINE?

I think it's pretty obvious that openings get more attention, which sort of makes sense. Openings are usually meant to get you hooked and psyched up about what's to come. Plus, when you're watching a good series, I can understand wanting to just skip to the next episode once the end credits roll. Nonetheless, I will say end credits are one of my favorite parts of a good episode. Especially when the episode is really good, the end credits are kind of a time for me to reflect on what just happened, and sort of process all the events. I'll skip any openings that I don't like, but with end themes, I tend to watch even the mediocre ones if only because I'm just thinking about things. I could name some great examples, but there are other threads for that.

I might argue that we should cut out openings and give characters more screen time, but I would definitely choose to keep endings for the above reasons. Plus we might have better music for our shows if producers only need to find one song for a given show. What do you think?

i actually like hearing the opening every time because it gives the anime a different perspective(sometimes the opening or ending doesnt relate to the show at all) ,it depends on the show though

It's not an either or for me. It really depends on the song.

i love openings and endings, but i usually come to like openings more, as everyone does, because openings are felt to be more important, people hire better bands and such for openings.
but regardless, i love both.

For this Fall season and even for most of this past year, the endings tended to be better than the openings IMO

Ithink ops are usually better but not always. Having said that I think it would be better to have ops at the start of a season or at least leave them out of important episodes so you have more time for story. I think eds should be left in so it can show who has worked on the show plus people can more easily skip the ending if they want.

Really depends on the anime for me, while I usually prefer openings to endings, I gotta say that HunterxHunter is one anime where I love to watch the ending instead of the opening.

Yeah it really depends on the anime. Like with RIN: Daughters of Mnemosyne I liked the ending song from the start but the opening I had to understand the story a little more to actually see that it fit perfectly well for the series.

At least the rule of thumb for me is, give op ed a try on the first ep, see if I like it.

So far, been a while now, Muv Luv op is the only I listen too so...

It doesn't make a difference to me, actually I stand correct it does make a different it cuts 3 minutes off each anime so I tend to stay away from this.

I should mention back in day when I was fan-subbing I had to listen to the openings and endings a lot, and I wasn't too fond of that (those of you that have used Aegisub should know).

ps. I don't fansub now, don't have time for this volunteer work lol

EDIT: If anyone has seen the Aria series, you know you're forced to watch the entire opening. The opening song is incorporated into each episode as in each opening is different as it is part of the episode. In Which I REALLY enjoyed.

There have been animes in the past that put the opening 10 minutes into the episode, ef (melodies) was one and I watched that as it felt part of the episode. The role can be placed to the ending theme when it starts singing near the end of the episode and move towards the credits. I personally like this sequence of events it shows a positive reaction to the audience.

I for one love having insert songs being played in an anime which is the main reason why I loved Macross Frontier so much, it shows more "work" and attention to detail in an anime which tends to make it more enjoyable.

I've found more often than not, I prefer the OP over the ED. It seems to be a difference in the visuals, not the music. The OP is more likely to be highly dynamic and very visual, while the ED is more likely to involve use limited animation or even a static image (although over involving some type of movement, such as panning).

Thinking back on anime that has done it that way, I think that's probably my favorite way to have it. In addition to making it feel like there was more effort put into the show, it kind of makes the ending or opening feel more like it's part of the show's soundtrack, rather than just something tacked on at the end.

That's sort of why I tend to like ED's though. After a good episode, I'm usually thinking about what happened in the episode, rather than the ED itself. Usually, it seems like the visual style (perhaps just for budgeting purposes) tends to the more subdued side of a show, with a lot of still-type shots of characters looking up at stars or walking thoughtfully. The reflective tone in ED's is something that appeals to me, I think, a little more than the excitement and flashy visuals that are appealing in OP's. I had never thought about it from a visual perspective though.

I prefer OPs much more, usually. There are only a handful of ED that I can think of while there are dozens of OP I really like. I think it' because of what TheAncientOne said: ED are typically much more mellow and I like higher tempo music in my anime. However, I do loved Fairy Tail's newest ED.

I like them equally. For example, Openings can really add to show. Like when I was a kid hearing "Rock the Dragon" instantly had me running to my TV. But endings can do two things. A good ending theme (Like Samurai Champloo or Cowboy Bebop) can really add to an anime, while the NEP (if there is one) can get you hooked on a show even more. God, I hated it when I was a kid and heard "Next time on Dragon Ball ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" lol.

I definitely like openings more. There aren't that many endings that i'll watch fully after every episode. I usually watch every opening for every episode (unless the opening song sucks). And i think it's definitely the music that makes the difference. I usually like the more energetic openings compared to the relatively slower endings. There are definitely exceptions though where I love the ending more, but that's usually because I love the song more.
